Show I RAILWAY CIRCLES The Hurricane liaised Over the Ra Transit Franchise SECOND SOUTH STREET ROARlliG 1 i I An Idaho Railway Scheme More Tourists ToDay A Very Important Eullng I Want Lower Bates I The action of tho city council in granting to the Rapid Transit company the right to I I 1aralleJ the double tracks of tho Salt Lake Cty Railway company on Second South street has raised no end of comment and it need not be said that it is nIl of a most unfavorable nature That rank injustice bas been done the old company is everywhere every-where conceded and even tho organ of injustice in-justice oppression and tyranny feels compelled com-pelled to Uy to the defense of the old company com-pany Of course no one cares much what tne Tribune says either one way or another an-other for its fast fading influence is nil and people have learned that if it opposes injustice in any instance it is because the injustice was not of its own making < In this case however we feel inclined give tue devil his due said one prominent Second South street man yesterday yes-terday and too much cannot be said in condemnation of the actions of the city council in granting the franchise in question ques-tion Leaving the street railways out of the question it merely means that Second South street is lulled in business way The idea of allowing four tracks to be run along this most important thoroughfare is an outrage upon every property owner on the street No matter where the proposed new lines are placed almost the entire street will be monopolized It will simply be impossible to put a track on each side of the present double track and if the Rapid Transit people use either the north or the south side it means that tho business on either side must suffer In other words to sum up the matter briefly j the laying of four tracks or even three tracks from First East to Seventh West means the driving of all other transit from that street and turning it over to its rival First South which is even now forging away head Such action is not only an outrage on the rights of thee the-e > company but is a serious blow to propertyowners and it is very doubtful if the Rapid Transit will be allowed to build the proposed line withoat a tussle in the courts Such was the opinion of one Second South business man who i did not care to be quoted as yet He however expresses the views of a great many others who were seen That the rapid Transit company will have a big fight on their hands if they attempt to use the franchise mentioned is a foregone fore-gone conclusion There are those who insist that they never intend to build that the city councilors coun-cilors knew it when they voted for the franchise that the whole sum and substance sub-stance is that the Rapid Transit people hone by this means to bulldzoe the Salt Lake City Railway company into allowing them the use of their tracks proposition jt will be remembered that was made a year or so ago to the old company but which was promptly refused It will be an interesting fight and those who own property pro-perty on Second South will be among the most intent of tho spectators and participants partici-pants |
