Show TilE RECORD RECALLED On Thursday morning our unestccmcd morning contemporary slashed away at the city council in true Bashi Baxouk style It cut right and left frothed at the mouth and tore its linen shockingly The occasion was the granting of the blanket franchise to the Rapid Transit company Now Till HriAM thinks the act was contemptible but we do not care to say that the councilmen are thieves and that they were bribed to make the grant Our contemporary contempor-ary however proceeds very nearly if not quite to that point But let it speak for itself The great objection is that we hare some dishonest men in the council and there is no estimate to be made of ivhat they will do The Tribune does not like to have to say this but it is true and as may be necessary it will keep the people so well posted that there will be no trouble in having matters perfectly understood This is very funny it is almost humorous when read in connection with what was said by the writer of the item three months ago about the gentlemen I gentle-men who compose the council During I those days TUE Hn IUID occasionally suggEsted sug-gested that all the Liberal nominees we re hardly tho right men to be placed in control of this prosperous and growing cit Wo never went so far as to intimate that any of them were thieves and scoun i drrlg the extreme of our reflection being that they were lacking in the responsibility responsibil-ity and trustworthiness which councilmen should enjoy The campaign is not so long I gone that ererboay forgotten how our contemporary frothed and foamed whenever when-ever a line appeared in these columns which suggested the bare possibility that the Tribunes pets were not the most capable capa-ble the most honorable and the truest men on earth We are not now going to draw the deadly parallel column on our cranky old contemporary but the temptation to reproduce one of its choice bits of praise in connection with the above cannot be resisted re-sisted The following appeared in a leading lead-ing editorial in the Tribunc of January 9 and is only one of many of similar import which used to come outabout that time We trust Hie Peoples party will look over the names of tho aldermen councilmen and justices Titij ated by the Liberals on Tuesday evening L t thin read the doubleleaded editorial at the 1f a of THE HERALDS editorial columns and 3 7 r for themselves whether the city would be safe in the hands of such fathers as the Lib crala propose to give it There is not a name that oes not represent what would be a first tlx s man In any country not a name except o f a bus ness man fully identified with the best in t r t of the c ty not a name that can be fairly cr tciMid So far at least the Liberals have fu Lid their promise of giving only firstclass I v c positions in case they carry the election Tt < i t ginning is an earnest of what will be and I t i a promise of transfiguration for the city gnu of good to every man interested in its future I fu-ture growth and reputation There is more of this slush but the above will bo sufficient at this time in connec Lon with Thursdays denunciation of the council It will show what a disreputable I and dishonest old reprobate the Tribune is i and iliustrato how readily it can lie when tht cccasion demands But there is another point to be consid arid There arc fifteen councilmen and one mayor in the council Last January y the Tribune said of the gentlemen they e is not a man that can be fairly criticised5 Yesterday the organ said that four mem bers of the council were directly intrested in ccrtam pending franchises and told how it had been roundly abused for making the accusation and the men in tho council who knew thej were guilty wero especially in uignant This is a very serious charge and the failure to name the four makes the accusation lie against the whole council Furthermore it is on record that tho franchise fran-chise was voted by every member not one councilman raising his voice against it hence if one is guilty why not all the others If four are corrupt arc the clove clean and merely supported the franchise through friendship for the dishonest quartette quar-tette The Tribune has said too much or has not said half enough It must name tho four boodlers and except them from its January certificate of character ort or-t must say that tho certificate was n misprint mis-print and should read There is not a name that represents what would be a firs class man in any country not a name of a business man fully identified with the best interests of the city not a name that cannot can-not be fairly criticised So far at least the Liberals have not fulfilled their promise ot giving only firstclass men positions incase in-case they carry the election |
