Show THE NUDE IN I ART A Question that is Agitating the Students Art league AN AETISTS PECULIAR POSITION Two Women Claim him as Their Husband His First Love Returned Unexpectedly and Unsolicited Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK May 8The question as to the propriety of letting mixed classes of art students stu-dents work from nude models is creating considerable con-siderable disturbance in the Art Students league in East Twenty third street just now The trouble began some seven or eight weeks ago When Augustus St Goudens the sculptor introduced u nude male model before his clay class three young men and four young women For several days the matter remained a secret The the younger students of heard the league of the innovation and quickly spread the news among all all the members The board of control met and resolved that Mr St Gaudcns must retire his nude model and he did so Subsequently it is said ho reintroduced him without the knowledge or permission of the board With the exception of one young woman who left the class allot Mr St Gaudens students were heartily in sympathy with him The board of control again made known its opposition to Mr St Gaudens course and he separated the young men of his class from the young women in obedience to the boards expressed wishes Since doing so he has Instructed the men students in the after noon and the women students in the morning This division of the class is said to be ills advantageous because it Interferes largely with the dust and the competitive spirit which has gone for toward making Mr St Gaudens students the pattern clay modelling class in the United States At the leagues monthly meet ing last Tuesday evening exPresident Charles Lamb Introduced n resolution against nude models In mixed classes and after some discus sion it was adopted by a vote of 32 to 17 |
