Show EIJS GFGliustpa: Is Supop Aooinill Early morning, Wednesday, Wednes-day, April 12, 75 excited Davis High School symphony, orchestra members departed on a tour-journey through Idaho to reach their destination destina-tion of Portland, Ore. They were returning to defend their title and trophy as 1977 sweepstakes winner of the Northwestern States Orchestra Orches-tra Festival. THE FIRST concert stop was Idaho Falls. Here the orchestra performed an afternoon af-ternoon concert for an audience of 500 selected string students from various schools in the surrounding areas. That same evening, April 12, the orchestra performed again in Idaho Falls in a community concert. THE next day found them on the road again. They reached Nampa, Idaho just in time to dress in concert black, tune and present a concert to 700 members of that community. Friday's activities included the long trip to Portland, a final rehearsal, a good night's sleep before the big concert on Saturday. SATURDAY morning the orchestra went directly to Mt. Hood College in Gresham wher6 they were scheduled to perform at 9:25 a.m., the second school to perform in their division. This contest performance was the poorest given by the orchestra on tour. "Festival Overture" by Shostokowitch and the "Firebird Suite" by Stravinsky, did not have polish and excellence given them by this orchestra in previous performances. A POOR concert hall and numerous mistakes by individuals in-dividuals in the orchestra, left the students very apprehensive apprehen-sive as to the outcome of the semi-finals. They spent the rest of the afternoon listening to some of the finest of the other 85 participating groups and their anxiety increased. At 5 p.m. thousands of young musicians gathered in the gym to hear the results of the day's judging. At 6:45 the decisions were read. Davis High was named one of the finalists in Division III. THE FINAL competition was to begin at 8 in the form of a concert featuring the 10 most outstanding orchestras. Judges would select a first and second place winner in each of the five divisions and name from among the five first place winners, the sweepstakes winner. Davis returned to their homeroom realizing they had a second chance to demon strate what their hours of work and dedication had accomplished. ac-complished. The seriousness of their intent and desire was fell by everyone in this final preparation. AT 11 p.m. the results were ready. Davis High Symphony Orchestra was named winner of Division III and moments later Sweepstakes Winner, 1978. |
