Those involved included Lyle Hoffman, left, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hoffman; instructor Norman Hassett, Glen Tonge, principal and Mark Earl, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Earl. BOUNTIFUL - Contractors Contrac-tors of the world, watch out! WELL THEY might if the craftsmanship of 26 students at Bountiful Elementary School is any indication. Those sixth graders built a model of a two-story home from scratch, complete with circular staircase, electric connections, windows, carpeting, car-peting, various wall coverings and a shingled roof. Under the direction of instructor ins-tructor Norman Hassett, himself a former contractor with seven years experience, the youngsters built the house following actual floor plans drawn up and utilized in construction con-struction of an East Layton residence. EACH STUDENT played some part in the project, whether it was acting as a home owner with all -the . problems involved in building a home for an owner to bankers and mortgage officers of-ficers down to the actual contractors, con-tractors, -who laid the carpet, plastered the walls and hammered ham-mered the roof into shape. The home is a scale model of a 2,300 square foot home appraised at $110,000 and was the most complex plan a contractor con-tractor friend could locate, Mr. Hassett said. More than just a project to while away the hours, it was used as a means to get students involved in-volved in mathematics and problem-solving. THE STUDENTS took the project seriously he said, as evidenced by one student acting act-ing as a building inspector who refused to accept a certain cer-tain job because it wasn't up to specifications. In addition to working out problems on their own, real-life developers and others in the building world visited and explained procedures. With school's end Friday, students drew lots to determine deter-mine who will keep the finished product and Mark Earl, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Earl of Bountiful was the lucky winner, tb |
