Show Vast Difference Between TV News And Newspapers There's a vast difference between be-tween news absorbed from the TV tube and keeping up with the news by reading a good newspaper. This difference is often overlooked, or unrecognized. unrecog-nized. Because TV news is action ac-tion film and in color, it's easier to digest. Therefore, some opt for the easy way and rely solely on the tube for their news, and they are invariably uninformed. THAT'S BECAUSE television televi-sion news is only a fragment, a rigidly selected fragment, of the day's news. Time is so expensive ex-pensive the networks have only 30 seconds or less allotted to most stories. Thorough coverage, or explanations, ex-planations, aren't possible in this time span. Secondly, television tele-vision news leans toward the dramatic, to action, because of technical and rating reasons. As a result, the story is often one-sided, and misleading. THIRD, television is more entertainment than news. TV anchormen these days have become "stars" signed to half million dollar contracts. They seldom leave the building in New York, unless covering ar convention, summit meeting, etc. THEY ARE, actually, entertainers enter-tainers who can read the news smoothly and accurately, and project a pleasing personality and a convincing demeanor. Today's leading anchormen have solid news backgrounds but many of today's commentators commen-tators do not. Without a sense of proportion or a solid background, back-ground, they often go off the deep end with silly statements which mislead millions. FOURTH, TV news concentrates concen-trates on the areas of the country coun-try where film can quickly reach network-trunk lines, which leaves out much of the country, covered only, as a rule, by features from time to time, or year to year. And, unfortunately, all three commercial networks are headquartered in New York City, and the executives running these news departments depart-ments cooDerate. The only way, still, for citizens to be adequately informed in-formed today is by regularly reading a good newspaper which can be read at a time and a place of the reader's choice, and convenience. |
