Show There Are ore Cars Per Family In Davis County SPECIALTO CLIPPER The number of cars in operation in Davis County continues to increase, year by year, with no saturation point in sight. AS A RESULT, the car density in the local area, as well as the number of two-car and three-car families is now greater than ever. The latest published figures show that, as of the beginning of this year, there were more passenger cars locally, per 100 families, than in most communities. ON JANUARY 1st there were some 54,320 cars registered regis-tered in the area. This was equivalent to 183 for every 100 local families. It was a bigger ratio than was found generally thoughout the United States, where the average was 146 per 100 families. In the Mountain States, it was 159. DESPITE the slowdown in auto production and sales during the recent recession, the number of cars on the nation's na-tion's streets and highways is considerably greater than five years ago. The records show that auto registration in the United States are now over 105,625.000, which is 15,864,000 more than in 1971. It represents an increase of 8,700 cars per day over the five-year period. THE ADDITIONAL millions of cars, combined with more trucks, buses and other vehicles, is causing traffic jams and bumper-to-bumper driving, especially in urban areas. No relief is in view in the struggle for traveling and parking space. Much of the increase in car ownership is attributed to the progressive movement of families from heavily-populated heavily-populated urban communities to the suburbs, where the automobile au-tomobile is the basic means of transportation. THE GROWING proportion of late model cars in and around Davis County is a reflection of the rising purchasing power in the area. As family income rises, so does the number of cars in operation. The net result is that auto registrations locally have increased from 42,710 to 54,320 in the last five years. WITH MORE cars in use, more money is being spent annually for maintenance. The expenditures in the past year in local service situations situa-tions for gas, oil, repairs and incidentals came to more than $14,695,000, as compared with the total that was spent five years earlier, $8,346,000. |
