Bed rest can be deadly for elderly A lack of exercise is more likely responsible for declining health in the elderly than old age, according to a geriatric expert who also says many elderly die of "bed rest," United Press International reported. "Exercise is good, too much rest is bad; bed rest is terrible," advised Dr. Joel Posner, Medical Director of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, to about 200 doctors at a recent seminar. Posner, who is involved in a study of exercise and aging, said people have always thought of old age "as a time of physical and intellectual decline. ..we now know that that's probably not true." Posner said his study has focused on about 400 healthy, elderly people between the age of 60 and 100, with half of them exercising and the other half not participating in any exercise. "You can increase an older person's physical capacity by exercising," Posner said, noting that after six months of exercise, a healthy person can regain the physical capacity experienced 20 to 30 years earlier. But, he added, if an older person is confined to bed rest, they "deterioriate very rapidly. gles, Auxiliary install officers Pleasant Grove Aerie and iry 3372 of the Fraternal v )f Eagles met May 31 and the filllficers were installed for the Lj!year.
