Show 20 — The Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday November 4 1979 reviews child rearing plan By Rev Ira T Ransom United Missionary Fellowship First we discovered that children INSTRUCTION Proverbs 4:1 30 Nearly years ago when I entered the ministry I gave very careful thought to the subjects of a Christian marriage and the rearing of children in a Christian home At that time I considered it indispensable to have a successful marriage and to have children who would at least not be a discredit to the Christian cause I expected my children to be normal nevertheless I felt that rebellious and disobedient children would disqualify me for the ministry I wondered: "How can I give directions to others if my opinions and philosophies will not work in our own home?" The Bible we believed was the best guidebook for living We therefore derided to follow the principles set forth in the Bible rather than adhere to popular contemporary idealogies In searching through the Bible we identified several things necessary for properly training children We began practicing those principles and now after 28 years of experience heartily recommend them to others for they have worked for us above our own expectations need says "Hear ye children the instruction of a father" Our instruction included some formal instruction Until they were through high school they heard two sermons every shared in family Bible Sunday reading and prayer daily and heard Bible stories or other Christian books read almost every evening As a result of the instruction our task was made easier for all four of our children trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior by age six After that time their hearts were inclined in the right direction I believe however that the informal talks and discussions were even more valuable than the formal instruction Deuteronomy 6:7 directs "And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children and shall talk of them when thou sittesl in thine house and when thou walkest by the way and when thou liest down and when thou risest up" We found that informal discussions during meals while traveling and while working together were exceedingly valuable For many years we did not have a television for we were fearful it would hinder wholesome family life Even after we got one we had a policy that only on that rare occasions was the television watched during meals Be Consistent The second principle which I would like to suggest is CONSISTENCY: We believed that it was confusing and unfair to allow the children to do certain things usually then rebuke them or punish them occasionally for the same behavior We observed the tragedy of nervous children who got nagged shout at and often “whacked" yet were not really made to behave We read in the Bible "Let your communication be yea yea: Nay Nay" (Matthew 5:37) We decided that we should say what we meant and mean what we said We also decided that guidelines for behavior should be established by principle and practiced with consistency rather than fluctuate according to varying feelings and moods Thirdly we were assured that children needed LOVE We read that kindness love and thoughtfulness are qualities to be practiced in the Christian life Specifically there is to be love in the home between husband aim wife anu bmci-and pm children (See Ephesians 4:31 32 and Titus 2:4) As I look back now I believe that words of affection hugs and kisses are very important but I believe that other evidences of love and caring are essential too such as time for the children and genuine interest in them and their activities If parents want the love respect and appreciation of their teens they must take time for the children when they are young Parents will reap rich dividends from the time invested in games attending school activities and taking lime to really listen when the children want to talk Children are not likely to abandon parents unless they have first been ignored children will need Fourthly DISCIPLINE Some may even need much discipline or severe discipline but usually a little firm discipline goes a long ways The book of Proverbs has some very practical advise regarding discipline No child should have to put up with nagging They need to learn to be happily and promptly obedient s Don't leave the kids unleashed NEW YORK (NEA) - Wave bye-by- e and now everybody into the station wagon: baby up front in the middle in her plastic feeding seat little John next to her with an old toy steering wheel someone found to keep him quiet And the other kids in the cargo area It's a long ride and they can use the luggage for building blocks when they're bored with the crossword books (don't forget puzxles and cut-opencils and scissors) They can also fight over the sheep dog who'll be strolling around and chewing the skates All set? Depress the door lock button and open the window so the kids can call out "See you soon" With luck they will According to Brian O'Neill of research of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Washington DC as they now sit the kids are in the best position for the worst damage in an ut vice-preside- nt accident The accident which of course only happens to other people Killing them "Between the ages of 1 and 35 motor v vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death" O'Neill aays "And every fcytar between lJSOO' and 1700 children under the age of 12 die as passengers (HEW and Department of Transportation statistics)” The Institute is trying to decrease those numbers with the help of insurance company funding only because O'Neill says "In this instance our interest is the same: to reduce highway deaths But we're not it a trade association We're a non-prof- research public Interest organization" And it's to your interest to vacate the car and start again with the baby "First” he says “infants should never be put in an automobile in those flimsy plastic feeding seats They have no protection capability whatsoever "Infants who cannot sit up should be strapped in an 'infant restraint' (available at car dealers drug stores position etc) in a facing backwards" Facing the rear window in other words That’s the ideal way for everyone but the driver semi-reclini- iSt-j- t travel he says "Most serious crashes are frontal and in this design the child is restrained from being thrown out of or around the car not so much by the belts as by the back of the infant restraint itself" That back — like the seat you're sitting against— comes in contact with more of the body than shoulder or lap belts so “the forces of impact are more evenly distributed" More evenly received then by a body lacking the adult bone structure that meets those forces in a crash via seat belts That's one reason rear collisions don't do as much harm as frontal ones he says: the seat back keeps you from moving backwards relative to the car which moves forward on impact Since the kids in 'the cargo area aren’t sitting back against anything though "They run the risk of being ejected through the rear window if the d car is Therefore kids should never be allowed under any circumstances” he says "to ride in the cargo area of a station wagon" Gez them out of there and into seat belts If you have more kids than belts "Put the two smallest children into a single lap belt in the center of the rear seaL Statistics show it’s the safest place to travel the farthest from outside hostile forces But I personally do not take children in a car ” he adds “unless I have enough seat belts for to rear-ende- So if one has been handed down get rid of it” And go one step further with the baby and little John in their restraints “Unless you tie those restraints down with the lap seat belt they're useless” O’Neill says “All you’ve done otherwise is put the child in something that's free to fly around inside the car in a - directives Perhaps Teddy Roosevelt's international philosophy states this valuable concept best "Speak with a soft voice but carry a big stick" We found that proper discipline at the right time enabled us to enjoy our children far more and made severe discipline almost unnecessary This principle is stated in Proverbs 29:17 At this point I would like to state one major reason why I believe teenagers rebel Teens want to be treated like adults They want more freedom Many parents are too permissive with their children when they are young They allow them to have so much freedom that they cannot be given much more freedom when they become teenagers without turning them loose completely What I've observed many times is that per- missive parents compound the problem by panicking when they discover that they are not able to control the children at age 12 or 13 Therefore they begin to crack down and become more strict at the very time that the teen wants and needs more freedom Rebellion becomes the natural consequence In order to have smooth sailing through teen years parents need to be firm and sufficiently strict so that the child learns respect for authority and self discipline Then it will be safe to give that child ample freedom in his teen years Lastly children and young people need GOOD EXAMPLES Paul instructed the young pastor Timothy to preach right and also to live right in order to be a good example (I Timothy 4:12) Parents above all others need to set good examples As parents we can undermine our best teaching regarding honesty if we accept too much change from a clerk We can undermine respect for authority if we exceed the speed limit when we think that it is safe Whether you are a preacher or not your children expect you to practice what you preach We took the Bible as the best authority for establishing our home and rearing our children and we are not sorry that we did It took time and effort but it has been worth it We are happy and our children are happy and successful We're still convinced that God’s way is right and that God's way is best Jeans featured in Swedish museum interior of the car and everything else in it Or fly through a window Well you can't strap down the sheep dog Maybe he should have stayed home — with those pencils and scissors “The movement in a crash is very sudden" O'Neill says "and children can stab themselves very nastily with any sharp pointed ob- jects" collision" Anything not tied down will do that in a crash — luggage skates the sheep and bang against the dog people No child should be shouted at They can be taught to respond to soft spoken Give them books they can look at or read About safe car travel for STOCKHOLM Sweden Jeans became (UPI) an official part of Swedish culture today -
