I think we should try to get the people on welfare cleaning our streets for us too." CEDAR CITY - Many people think that being a city official is a lot easier than it actually is. Often they are quick to blame the city council or the mayor for the problems of the community. However, sometimes they might have a legitimate complaint to present to the city officials of-ficials or perhaps an idea about how something could be improved. Keeping this in mind, the Record this week wondered what the people on the street had in mind if they were the mayor of Cedar City. This week's Street Scenequestion is: "If you were the mayor of Cedar City, what would you do differently?" Paul Arns: "Well, I'll tell you, I'm not politically inclined for office or anything. I've lived here for a good many years, so now I just keep a going. I don't know just what they've been doing. I'm not around enough to keep track of what's going on. I know what I'd say if you asked about the president. I'd kick him out." Lou Anne Forsyth: "That involves too much. I don't know really where to start because there's really a lot I feel. I don't agree with the new part they are going to do down here, ( downtown redevelopment) the new buildings and stuff, yet. I don't think Cedar is going to handle it. There's not much he can do either about our economy here in Cedar. "But, everything is so political. If your husband- is a Main Street businessman you know your kids are going to make it, like all-stars, or if he sluffs high school or something it's okay. But, if your husband doesn't work on Main Street, then they're nobody, or if you don't know the mayor personally then you're nobody. You've got to be a really good friend to get somewhere in Cedar. It's too hard for people to move in and make a go of it. You've got to have background, money and family. "I am from Cedar, my family's here, so I've got it made. I've had too many friends that start a business here and leave because they're not real tight with everybody involved in it. I've seen too many people come to Cedar and can't make it, and so why bring in all the new buildings, all the new stuff at the college, when so many people come in and leave again?" Theran Heap: "I don't know. I haven't given it much thought. Well, I'd definitely vote against the Cedar Canyon thing where they want to put a ski resort in. There's not anything else I can think of right off hand." Hunter Nelson: "First of all. I'd have all these vacant lots cleaned up. Second, I'd do a little more on the repair work on the streets. I guess that's about all I can think of right now." Jack Israel: "Ask me one I can answer. I've never thought about it. I'm fairly new to Cedar City and I haven't had any real strong feelings about things, one way or the other." Randall Wood: "That's a hard question to answer. an-swer. I think I'd probably allow, according to a few rumors that I've heard, I'd probably allow a few more of the bigger corporations cor-porations to come into the city. I think a few of the bigger corporations would help the economy |
