Show Mirrors of Public Opinion: TX THE current discussion over the Coun--- ty Sewer project one of the County commissioners stated that the board of which he is a member was simply a "mirror" "mir-ror" which reflects the will of the citizens. The idea that our chosen governmental government-al leaders are our sqrvants, and should do what we say, is, of course, the essence of democracy. However, as citizens, we are ofttimes aware that our governing- officials are better informed than we, and should therefore act for the public good. In the case before us, we do not suggest sug-gest that the County Commission vote the sewer in if the people don't want it. On the other hand, thev should not throw it out because a certain number of people have voted one wav or another on postcards. post-cards. Especially is this true when the Commission knows that the people do not have all the true facts. In submitting-their submitting-their resignation, members of the Sewer Advisorv Committee called for an impar- , tial study of the problem before final action. ac-tion. They are willing to lay open the case . before the people. Certain members of the opposition group are clamoring for the whole project proj-ect to be dropped. This attitude alone should cause th'e commissioners and county coun-ty citizens to be suspicious of the underlying under-lying reasons for such vehement opposition. opposi-tion. Residents of the County are still confused con-fused about the main issues in regard to the sewer. If the commissioners make a bad decision, following what seems to be popular vote, they must be held responsible for the results. |
