Show 0 Sugar House State Park Suggested As Site of All-Purpose Auditorium A gathering of civic club leaders, which Gus Backman, executive execu-tive secretary of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, labeled a "real, town hall meeting," was held Monday night in the City and County Building for the purpose of planning and later building a civic auditorum. i Organizers of the meeting were the members of the Al-trusa Al-trusa Club of Salt Lake, who invited all interested persons to attend. Mr. Backman was called upon to conduct the discussion. dis-cussion. He traced the history of previous abortive civic auditorium audi-torium projects, which date back more than 40 years. Stresses Need Mr. Backman stressed the need of ah auditorium for conventions, con-ventions, sports events, entertainment enter-tainment programs, etc. He expressed ex-pressed his personal opinion that the project would be worthwhile worth-while even in face of present high prices. Cost of an auditorium audi-torium seating about 15,000 people peo-ple would be about $2,400,00, Mr. Backman said. Although it was suggested that the question of location of the audito'rium not be discussed, Horace A. Sorensen and John C. Barnes, pointed out that it was very likely that the state, the county and the city could work cooperatively on an "all-purpose" "all-purpose" auditorium at the state park on the prison site. Mr. Sorensen said that the auditorium audito-rium would benefit the whole state because of its convenience to both tourists and citizens. Both men stressed the plentiful parking facilities at the prison site. After some discussion it was resolved that a committee be formed with one representative from every Salt Lake civic club to launch' the auditorium project. proj-ect. This committee will form an executive board which will work out the details for submission sub-mission to the committee. |
