National Guardsmen To Switch to ; Week End Drills The Army National Guardsmen throughout the state will switch from evenings to week ends early ear-ly In 1964 for their regular armory ar-mory training assemblies, Major Gen Maxwell E. Rich announced announc-ed today. The change will affect about 4500 men in 25 communities. It Is pending final approval of the National Guard Bureau in Washington, Wash-ington, D. C, to provide additional addi-tional funds for two not n meals a month for each guardsman. Army National Guardsmen will train an average i one week end a mor.tli other than once weekly In the evening, as under the present training program, Gen. Rich said. The new plan "will Just about double the number of effective training hours for each national guard member and will produce more combat ready units," the Utah adjutant general believes. The monthly training assemblies assem-blies will normally be held eight hours each on Saturday and Pun-day. Pun-day. Time out for religious services serv-ices on Sunday will continue. A specific improvement on the old system will be the opportunity opportu-nity for National Guardsmen to use their equipment in the field an impossibility during the current two-hour training period.
