The Redmen dropped their opener op-ener of the year against Moapa Valley High School at Overton, Nev. by a 55 to 53 margin In an overtime. Saturday, however, the outcome out-come was at least apparent from the first as a talented Western West-ern High of Las Vegas," Nevada pounded out a convincing 70 to 43 win over the Redmen. Coach Richard Hobbs, however, how-ever, feels that the Redmen showed some good potential and expects to show good lmprov-ment lmprov-ment as the pre-season schedule moves along. One 'result of the trip that was most discouraging was the injured knee which senior guard Don Rvld suffered In the opening open-ing game against Moapa Valley. Reid led all scorers through the first halt and was continuing continu-ing the pace in the third period when he suffered the injury. He still turned in 16 points for the top effort for the Kedmen. At Western the Rodmen were outmanned but one bright spot showed up In this game for Coach Hobbs. Lee Hunter, moving mov-ing from forward to the post position po-sition this year tanked a total of 17 points for a fine evening and sophomore Bruce Holmes came up with 11 counters. Holmes added six points all from the foul .line in the Moapa Valley game the first night With Hunter moving off the forward line to center, Coach Hobbs moved Joe Ward from guard to forward to fill that gap. When Reid was injured he found himself lacking in depth on the guard line with Holmes and Johnny Black, the only two men. Two men are still on the injured list for the Redmen and only IJ ir.rr. made the Nevada trip. In both contests the Redmen started slow. At Overton they trailed by four points at the halfway mark, 26 to 22, but came up with the big third quarter, led In the early minutes by Reid who had seven points In the period before leaving via the Injury. In the fourth period the two teams battled on an even basis liil near the end of the period. A pair of fouls In the closing seconds by Moapa Valley tied the score forcing the overtime. In addition to Rcid's 1C counters, count-ers, Wes Roberts on the forward line hit for 13, eight of them coming in the final period to keep the Redmen In contention. Saturday it was Western High from the start. A full court press caught the Redmen completely unawares in the first half of play and the Western crew moved out to a 21 to 6 first quarter lead and held a 39 to 11 margin at halftime. The Redmen bounced back In the third period, however and with Hunter tanking 12 of the 14 points for the Redmen as they held their own. Holmes hit 10 of his It points in the fourth period to lead the way In that eight minute stint The Redmen had 14 points in the third compared to 15 for Western, then added 18 to the Las Vegas quintet 16 in the final fin-al period. The victory, however, was already In the hands of the Western High squad. Em. Molisee, the top scorer for Western and a two year all-starer, all-starer, was held to 11 points by the Redmen. The balanced offense of-fense of Western was not hampered ham-pered and Skip Mead tanked 26 points to lead all scorers. Molisee in a Friday night contest con-test against Dixie Hlt?h School which Western won 86 to 43, had 45 points.
