In the biennial report of the State Board of Horticulture, received by Gov. Heber M. Wells today, some space is given to the San Jose scale, which the fruit-growers of Weber and Utah coun- ties have had to contend with in addition addi-tion to the ordinary orchard pests. Two thousand dollars was appropriated by the last Legislature to be used in eradicating the San Jose scale, and this money was put to good advantage by the board. The work of Epraylng for the scale is still in progress In Weber county, there being about $500 of the original appropriation still unexpended. The board has definitely determined that fruit trees pruned and scraped and then sprayed twice with a solution of lime, salt and Bulphur, can be freed from the scale. Owing to the general adulteration of parls green the board has recommended that white arsenic be used as a poison for the codlin moth, than which there is no worse enemy to Utah orchardi6ts. The codlin moth lays the eggs that produce pro-duce the' apple worm. The board recommends that the present pres-ent law be so amended as to give complete com-plete tent inspection in every county of the State. This State has made a great advance In the nursery business. A few years ago the industry amounted to practically practi-cally nothing, while now nursery stock is shipped to all the surrounding States. The board will return the $500 appro- prlated for the introduction of the kohl I melsen, a bird to destroy the codlin moth. It is stated that there is a United States law prohibiting the importation im-portation of the bird.
