Show HELD UP INDAYLIGHT I Daring Work Done by Two Thugs I Yesterday II I t I HON G W THOMSON ON OFT OF-T VICTIMS The Desperadoes Were Hounded Up in Short Order by the Police and I Identified at the Station How 1 the Crooks Operated In broad daylight and with dozens of pedestrians around them two bold robberies were committed by a duo of I pickpockets on the streets of Salt Lake I 4 I yesterday Both of the thugs thrQugh the daring Hank movement of one of their victims who held l the struggling I pickpocket until Officer Roberts arrived ar-rived are now held in durance at the city jail They save their names as C O Miller and James Murray and from all indications are a pair of crooks of the worst limbo One of the men whom the thieves swooped down upon was a shining mark He is Hon George W Thomson a veteran of the G A R and national committeeman of the Silver Republicans for the state of Washington The other victim was S Green a traveler now stopping at the Templeton and the diamond stud which was purloined from his shirt front by one of the crooks has not yet I been discovered I Both robberies were committed with in an hour and the two victims of the thieves were relieved of their valuables shortly after arriving on the Rio Grande Western train The most dar I ing of the robberies was the one in which Mr Thomson was involved I Both worked with the expertness of I the professional crook The thefts were both committed while the thugs were rushing and jostling against the man whom they had spotted for their I own j ownMr Thomson fell into the hands of the Philistines just as he descended i from Rapid Transit car No 26 at the i corner of Second South I came in on the Rio Grande Western said Mr i Thomson yesterday m relating his experience ex-perience and did not arrive here until un-til about 2 oclock as the train was late My original intention was to goon go-on directly to Tacoma but finding that Mr Bryan was here I concluded to wait over and see him As I was getting off the car I noticed two men crowding against me asking questions and trying to make it appear that they were strangers and did not know which way to go When I reached the sidewalk side-walk I found my pocketbook was missIng I miss-Ing I at once called to the street car conductor who pointed out the two men to me Both of them were walk I i tag away rapidly in different direc1 I lions but I caught up with the smaller one and demanded that he give me the pocketbook He made an effort to pass j it to the other man but I was holding him firmly and he dronned it Then I I someone picked It up anti handed it tome to-me and about that time the officer arrived ar-rived and both men were arrested Mr Thomson said that the Docket book contained only a small amount in cash but in It was his ticket to Tacoma Ta-coma whither he was returning after an eastern trip Besides being national silver committeeman Mr Thomson is vice president of the TransMississippi exposition for Washington R OConnor a private 6f the Twenty fourth was a witness of the robbery He Identified the two men at the station sta-tion and said that when he first saw them the smaller man Murphy had a dark coat thrown over his arm The man who picked up the pocketbook was W H Sharp a laborer but all he saw of the case was the dropping of the spoils Both of the crooks have the appearance appear-ance of professional crooks who have served a loig apprenticeship on the turf I utfAn L An examination of the men at the I station1 did not reveal anything startling although one of them had a railway ticket concealed in his shoe Mr Green Identified Miller the tall crook as one of the men who relieved him of his diamond stud but was riot so positive as to the smaller man Mil i ler is tall and well dressed while his accomplice Is of diminutive stature Both are of swarthy complexion with keen dark eyes A Salt Laker who was recently in Butte states that he saw one of the men there He was a notorious gambler gam-bler and sure thing man and not long ago was forced to leave town AccordIng Accord-Ing to their story they came from Los Angeles where Miller was a cabinetmaker cabinet-maker and Murray a steam fitter The officers look upon the two crooks as forerunners of several others who are likely to flock here during the visit of the Christian Endeavorers and the impending celebration The officers are watching vigilantly for people of their llfc |
