Show I TVTRDBIiING WHiTI OTHER PEOPLES PEO-PLES BUSINESS I is very much easier to rear other peoples children in the way they should I go so that when they get old they will I not depart from i than to raise ones can children that way And i seems to I be easier for some of the people of this nation to regulate the affairs of other I nations better than those nations can Occasionally some Enjlish or other foreign society passes resolutions con demning lynching I in America and call lug on this government to do all In cal its I power to suppress It Such resolutions never have the effect to te efect suppress lynching but are always resented as an officious Intermeddling with matters that do not concern those passing them And so they are But in this country there are the same kind of societies so-cieties which are ever poking their noses into the affairs of some govern government govern-ment and telling i what should be done Such a society a this is the American I Purity Alliance of New York A subcommittee sub-committee of the executive committee I of the society met the other day and adopted an appeal to Queen Victoria on the subject of regulating vice in India In-dia They first informed her majesty that the signers of the appeal were citizens of the United States of Amer lea and members and iVlcMflc ff tVia I American Purity Alliance i and that they had learned with much regret and I apprehension of the action of her maj estys government represented by the I secretary of state for India and publicly public-ly endorsed by members of the house of lords providing for state regulation of vice in India in connection with the British army and foreshadowing its i possible reintroduction into England The appeal then proceeded as follows We respectfully and most earnestly represent to your majesty that state supervised vice is in effect an incitement incite-ment to vicious indulgence is murillv wrong Is unjust to women and degrading de-grading to men The great nationality of which you are justly honored queen and empress by its example exerts a powerful influence for good or ill in many lands especially is this true in the United States of America closely inked with the mother country by ties of blood and language We therefore pray that you wi direct di-rect your majestys officials whose proper function is to obey your supreme su-preme will and who seek in any part of your dominion to establish bate regulation and supervision of vice to refrain therefrom and instead to en davor faithfully t diminish vice itself and the temptations thereto and thus effectively to lessen the loathsome diseases dis-eases which it begets We pray that your long and beneficent benefi-cent reign made exceptionally conspicuous con-spicuous by your own great personal worth and exemplary virtues may at this juncture be preserved from the I threatened tarnish of a perilous compromise com-promise with Iniquity a system of unspeakable demoralization for manhood man-hood and practical slavery for womanhood woman-hood and girlhood in the name of law We greet you with salutations of great respect and honor This is nothing but pure impertinence impertin-ence even though it be prompted by worthy motives What business is It nf these people how the British frovi rn ment regulates vice in India any more than it is the business of the British people to tell the American government govern-ment how to regulate vice in the United States Have not the Purity Alliance people enough to do right in New York City to keep them busy How wuld hey fancy having an English purity society telling the authorities of New York how to regulate vice i The problem of regulating vice never I has been solved so far as dUDprjijsing j i is concerned and even the clcsest students of the problem are jy no I means agreed as to the best mthods of regulating it but it doesnt aid in I the solution of the problem to have a society In one country obtrude its 31 I on the questions on the government of I another country that is wrestling with it Meddlesome societies ire Qui as I obnoxious as meddlesome individuals |
