desire to veil for the Ftriklng and picturesque Bryan personality person-ality would be recognized anywhere in the state of Utah In this humble and unostentatious manner did the man who received tne ballote of six and a half million tot ers last November make his entrance to the capital city of a state that gave him a majority of 51000 on a total vote of 85000 Mr Bryan rose early yesterday morning morn-ing from his berth in the Pullman oar that reached the Oregon Short Line depot at 3 a m In truth he had not really retired since Tuesday evening Tt yomings enthusiastic Bryunites kept him making speeches from 7 a m I Wednesday until 2 a m yesterday morning and his tour through that state was like the triumphal mach of a conquering hero The last stop was at Evanston and over 1000 citizens of that town assembled at the depot at 130 a m in the hope of shaking hands with the undaunted champion of the silver cause MET AT THE DEPOT At 7 oclock Hon Frank B Stephens Bryans old friend and school mate drove up at the depot With him was i I Hon Thomas Kearns of Park City I the hottest Bryan man in America I Secretary Culmer of the TransMisMs sirpi congress went to the depot with I I the intention of taking a northbound I train to meet Mr Bryan not knowing I that he had arrived Judge Powers was also at the depot for the purpose I of meeting Bryan after which he took the southbound train for Prove hayIng hay-ing been called away lij important professional business I I Hooray for Bryan roared a voice like a megaphone as the silver leader made his appearance on the depot platform himself up to the general public During Dur-ing that time probably 150 citizens called to pay their respects and he had not a moment to himself The crowd Included men women and children chil-dren gold Republicans silver Republicans Repub-licans and Populists Mr Bryan appeared fatigued trom the effects of the exciting demonstrations of the previous day but was in line spirits and declared that he was feeling feel-Ing all right had gained 20 pounds since the election now tipped the scale at 210 and felt not the slightest uneasiness un-easiness concerning the state of his health Every visitor received a pleasant greeting and a warm hand shake By his systematic interest and cordial manner Mr Bryan made It understood that he was one of the people and revealed I re-vealed glimpses of the secret of his wonderful popularity with the nesses 1 The very first caller was Mrs Sells widow of the late Colonel Elijah Sells Colonel Sells was one of the founders of the Republican party a stalwart of the stalwarts and one of the last acts of his life was his renunciation of lat ttrday republicanism He was a warm supporter of Bryan during lest years campaign D C Dunbar acting national Democratic Demo-cratic committeeman from Utah was commiteeman one of the early callers He spent 20 minutes with Mr Bryan in a iiscus sion of national politics as affecting the situation in Utah I PYTHIAN VISITORS Then came a delegation of Knights of Pythias who called to pay their respects re-spects to a distinguished member o their order The delegation consisted of Grand Chancellor Sonnedecker Supreme Su-preme Representatives L H Farnsworth Farns-worth and Ed W Duncan Grand Prelate Pre-late T W Patton George Osmond J P Meakln and F W Gardner Mr Bryan evinced keen interest in the condition con-dition of the order in Utah and promised prom-ised the delegation that he would devote de-vote an evening to the Knights during dur-ing his coming visit to Salt Lake On that occasion all the lodges of the city will unite in giving him a big reception I was largely through Mr Bryans efforts ef-forts that the order was chartered by special act of congress A delegation of boys representing the James A Garfield lyceum were presented pre-sented to Mr Bryan as the boy orators ora-tors of Salt Lake and each lad went away with the conviction that tha greatest orator of the day was hit friend LADIES CALLED A delegation of ladles consisting ci Senator Mattie Hughes Cannon Dr Ellen B Ferguson Miss Claire Ferguson Fergu-son Mrs Judge Rhoades and Mrs Dr Pratt were among the callers Miss Ferguson wore her deputy sheriffs badge and Mr Bryan was interested in the information that Salt Lake ladies served as peace officers Among the other callers during the forenoon were J 1 Cohen
