Show I AT THE ALTA CLUB Lunch and Reception in Honor of tho Democratic Leader At 1 oclock Mr Bryan and Mr Stephens boarded a First South streetcar street-car on their way to the Alta club where a luncheon and reception had I been arranged In Mr Bryans honor They walked down Main street from I the clock corner and down Second South to the Dooly block Mr Bryans appearance on the busiest thoroughfares thorough-fares created a decided sensation as no one failed to recognize the familiar features fea-tures of the great silver leader Many people rushed forward to grasp his j 1 I hand others simply stopped and stared I in openmouthed awe and a few demonstrated dem-onstrated their devotion to the cause I aud7 its champion by giving utterance to yells Iie lunch which was given in Mr I Bryans honor by Mr E A McDanlel manager ot The Herald was one of the I happy events of the day The guests In addition to Mr Bryan were ills excellency I ex-cellency GOvernor Heber M Wells i Judge C C Goodwin editor of the TrIo i i une General John Q Cannon editor of the Deseret News Alfales Young editor of The Herald C S Varian of I the state silver Republican committee R W Sloan chairman of the state I I Democratic committee o C Dunbar acting Democratic national conrmlttee i actlng Democrtc natonal cmmltee man for Utah B T Lloyd chairman of i nDf Wc J j h the Democratic lI committee John W Burton of the DemocratIc state executive ex-ecutive committee Henry W Lawrence I Law-rence Bryan presidential elector J J Daly Bryan presidential elector Frank B Stephens and C L Rood of The Her ahl company Judge Powers exchair man of the Democratic state committee commit-tee and Judge Henderson president I of the state association of Democratic clubs sent regrets that professional engagements en-gagements prevented their presence Then followed a reception by members I bers of the Alta club which lasted until un-til 3 oclock All of the members of the club were presented to Mr Brvan After an hour c pleasant chat Mr Bryan left the club op the arm of Mr Stephens and wended his way through the streets to the office of Secretary Culmer of the TransMIsstsslppi congress con-gress At the Dooly block entrancehe was accosted by a shabbily dressed grayhaired old man who had been waiting for an hour for a chance to shake hands with him He also desired to proffer advice as to the best method of running political campaigns but Mr Bryan goodnaturedly protested that he had not sufficient time at Ms dis = sal At Secretary Culmers office Mr Bryan Bry-an discussed TransMississippi congress affairs with the secretary for half an hour He is greatly Interested In the coming meeting and expressed the belief be-lief that i would be the moat successful success-ful that had been held He thought there would be 700 or SOO delegates in attendance I am deeply interested in the irrigation question said he and expect to learn a great deal on this subject at the meeting Mr Bryan then returned to the Stephens home and rested until the dinner hour |
