Show THE SCARE THAT TAILED Standard Han Has a Severe Case of What is It The Standard yesterday had a top heavy article directed against the water supply of Osden a sensational top heavy article claiming that all manner of things disgusting is in the water we drink These impurities were said to exist in the reservoir and to read the catalogue of them one was reminded nursery jingle about snakes and suails and puppy dogs tails The I Standard reporter claimed to have gone up and with a bucket and piece of wire j drawn out a mess of stuff that was j simply horrible No conjurer ever shook such a varied assortment of ar I tides out of a borrowed hat as did the scribe produce from the bucket of water taken from the reservoir A bottle of the stuff was brought back I to the Standard office and placed on free exhibition It was truly interesting interest-ing to an entomologist but somehow people went on drinking the water just the same and when the subject was referred to it was likewise mentioned that the election for water works bonds would occur in a day or two Few people took the article seriously even if they took time to read it About the most dissrustincr thine con nected with It was that the scare should have been attempted at this time when a lot of Christian Endeavor En-deavor visitors are coming through the city and might not understand the political situation here The Standard article implied that the reservoir had not been cleaned out for five years On this point Mr Krichee of the company said to the Herald Every bit of water was out of the reservoir last January or February for nearly 20 days and the place given a thorough cleaning The bottom of the reservoir was also repaIred at this time I fix the date by the Invoices of I lumber received by us from the Eccles I Lumber company AVe have a method I of turning the water directly into the pipes when we wish to make repairs Furthermore we have men go up to the place every morning to remove any matter that may have gotten into the water The water is screened In three places before coming into the distributing distribut-ing system but all the screens in Christendom will not keeD out that sediment of which the Standard reporter re-porter complained It exists in all pure water You will find it on the rocks of every mountain stream In the world As the Standard article alluded to the reservoir as a breeding plqce for malaria and scarlet fever a Herald reporter called on Sanitary Inspector Moyes to see If these diseases are prevalent Mr Moyer says there is aCt to his knowledge a single case of either of these diseases in the city nor of any contagious disase The Herald also interviewed every druggist in toe city These included C L Peebles S P Ash William Driver Jessee J Driver T B Carr and S AV Badcon These druggists all denounce as false the Standards claim that the water is filthy or even impure They had not made analyses but said the water could not reek with such filth without their detecting It Their investigations were certainly as thorough as those of a Standard reporter Mr Peebles said he had examined the water under a powerful microscope and found it entirely en-tirely free from organic matter and nearly free from vegetable matter Mr Driver and Mr Tulley tested the water for The Herald to determine if any organic matter existed in the water that came through their pipes They did not find even a trace of any foreign for-eign substance After this Mr Drlved said he was more than ever convinced that Ogden had the purest water of any city in the United States All the druggists denied that there is or has been recently any contagious disease in the city and that the health of the population is better now than they have known it to be for a number of years These assertions are corroborated by he statements of all the physicians hat could be interviewed by the san tary inspector and his official records The inspector went up to the reservoir with Councilman Hill and they told The Herald they could not find any such conamons as me oiuuuaiu claimed existed From the outside there was no evidence that the water was impure that it was in as good condition as could be expected in a reservoir with an earth bottom There was no stench whatever and no odor except such as might come from any fresh water stream This was the unanimous report of the citizens who visited the reservoir during the day and they included several employees of the Standard It was ascertained that the reservoir was inspected on May 19 by Councilmen Council-men Hill and Greenwell with the sanitary san-itary inspector and they had no complaint com-plaint to make at the time hence the assertion that the pool has been notoriously no-toriously filthy for five years is disproved dis-proved Councilman Greenwell stated that he had inspected the bottle of slime at the Standard office and was convinced that some of the moss and other vegetation veg-etation was such as could not come from that locality As the Standard based a virulent editorial on the nauseating nause-ating report and printed the report with scare headlines the work cannot be condemned as that of a kindergarten kindergar-ten reporter and It is hard to understand under-stand what motive could prompt the publication of such an article at a time when thousands of Christian En deavorers are about to visit the city Mr Kircher of the waterworks company com-pany mentioned that quite recently the company had sent out its bills that it had withdrawn considerable patronage from the Standard and that one of the citizens who had been continually con-tinually complaining to the council about the reservoir had been insisting that the county should spend 5000 to connect his Isolated residence with the city mains that notwithstanding his aversion to the filthy fluid he had allowed al-lowed himself to become indebted to < the company several hundred dollars for this same fluid However with Ogden proper the attempted sensation fell flat and no harm will be done unless un-less to disgust the number of strangers about to be entertained who do not understand that In about two weeks there will be an election here for the purpose of determining whether this city shall Issue 250000 in bonds for a waterworks system and who may comprehend com-prehend to what lengths a paper so called will go in its support of such a movement |
