Show I JAPS AT JOHANNESBURG Treatment There May Cause Us Much I Trouble Washington July IThe secretary f of state has written a letter to the gpvernor of California asking him to cause an investigation of the circumstances S circum-stances under which to Japanese sob i jectsr ° were driven away from the new I town of Johannesburg in that state This Action is taken because the Jap aneseminister here has made complaint that the men who were employed as i ccoksand came in conflict with a local I l movement being prevented from following their business were deprived of privileges guaranteed by treaty between be-tween the United States and the Japs I thd facts show that this coniDlaint is well founded the next step probably prob-ably will be a demand by the Japanese Japan-ese government for Indemnity and the protection of the men in their rigVs While this particular case is not le garded here as threatening to give rise to difficulty in its settlement the frequency fre-quency with which the state depart ment in late years has been obliged to intervene with Sate authorities in the protection of Japanese subjects inmost in-most cases unsuccessfully too gives rise to the expectation that the Japanese Japan-ese in the near future will be oblzred to appeal to congress to prevent such occurrences which may lead to International Interna-tional breaches and even war I |
