Show Republicans Considering Dearden's Replacement The Central Committee of the Summit County Republican party will meet Thursday, Dec. 28 in Coalville to select a list of potential replacements for former County Commissioner Alva Dearden. Dearden, 70 resigned Dec. 5, citing health and business reasons. He had three years remaining on his term, and was commission chairman at the time he stepped down. Republican Central Committee Chairman Al Cooper told the Record Tuesday that the 8:00 p.m. meeting at the county courthouse would include the Republican chairman and vice-chairman from each of the voting precincts in the county. Their job, he said, would be to come up with at least six names from which the remaining county commissioners could make a selection. "I would hope that we would come up with six names Thursday night and we would have those in the hands of the commission in a day or two," he said. However, since the county commission is not scheduled to meet until Jan. 2, it is likely, he noted, that the incoming commission, Bill Wallin and Gerald Young, will make the decision. Cooper would not speculate as to who was being considered, but he did state he had been on the telephone during the past few weeks trying to find prospective nominees. In keeping with the "gentlemen's agreement" regarding representation of each area of the county on the commission, Cooper said it was very likely that Dearden's replacement would also come from the Henefer or Coalville areas. As to qualifications, Cooper said interest, leadership, commitment and available time would be some of the factors considered in choosing the people for the list .- "I would like to see somebody who is very serious about the job, not just looking at filling an unexpired term," he stated. Since, he noted, the job of county commissioner is becoming more demanding each year, he predicted the question of a nominee's available time would be weighed very heavily. "We've talked to quite a few people only to find they haven't the interest. ..we don't want a list in name only," said Cooper, who stated he wanted each peson on the list to be a viable nomination. |
