The Utah State Historical Society recently acquired two mantelpieces from Dee Broad-head Broad-head of Salt Lake City." Mr. Broadhead donated parlor par-lor and bedroom mantelpieces. Both are made of pine with the surface painted to look like marble. The mantel pieces were originally from the William Whitehead Taylor home in Lehi, which has been demolished. The mantelpieces were made in the mid-1850's and are representative of early Utah furniture. They show the murks of hand planing and have hand cut nails. The lines re ir. a simple and plain style derived from the Federal period of American architecture. This style, with its austere lines, was easy for the pioneers to imitate. Mr. Broadhead also donated a lockset with porcelain doorknobs door-knobs from the Taylor home. The lock has a patent date of 1870. |
