Show Swedish Visitor Enjoying Park City By Alexander T. Holmsen Sweden's Peter Jonsson is in Park City this week. Skier? Tennis star? Volvo rep? Wrong. None of the above. Peter is a 14-year-old ice hockey player whose Sodertalje Sportk-lubb Sportk-lubb bantam team just flew over from Stockholm for the 2nd Annual Salt Lake Holiday Hockey Tournament to be held at the Salt Palace and Bountiful Ice Rink from Dec. 27-30. Peter's host in Park City is Stephen Holmsen, his opposite number on the Salt Lake bantam team. Also participating are teams from Fort Saskatchewan, Canada; Portland, Ore.; Fresno, Calif.; anu Littleton, Colo. This is the first time that Peter has been to the United States and, when asked what he thought of it, replied in one word: "Terrific!" Peter's English Eng-lish is very good, probably the best on the team, and he has studied it in school for five years. $ The team is coached by Ingemar Janstad, assisted by Alf Karlsson. When asked who paid for the trip, the coaches replied that the boys had been raising money through various projects such as selling jackets, calendars-, and selling raffle tickets for over a year. The cost of the round-trip air flight, plus the stopover in Minneapolis where they will play a second tournament after leaving here, is approximately $600 per boy. The boys stay with hockey-playing families in both cities to defray the already considerable costs. Peter's home town is Nyk-varn, Nyk-varn, population 2,000, and is about the same distance from Stockholm as Park City is from Salt Lake. His father owns an electrical supply store and Peter works there after school, doing, in his words, "Everything." Peter has played hockey for four years, two as a goal-keeper and two as right wing. This is his first year with ehe Sodertalje Sportklubb. In addition to hockey, Peter plays soccer and loves skateboarding. He is eagerly looking forward to a trip to Wolfe's in Salt Lake Where he hopes to pick up a Logan board with Kryptonic wheels at a price far less than he would have to pay in Stockholm. Peter is also an amateur photographer and hopes to get some good shots of the Mormon Temple, about which he has heard a great deal. We welcome Peter Jonsson to Park City and Salt Lake and hope he has a wonderful time both here and in Minneapolis. |
