- Transfer station studied CENTER VnXECity council members are studying the feasibility feasibili-ty of a Centerville transfer station that would allow residents to drop off refuse locally for transport to the county Bum Plant. The council recently heard from Curtis Jones, president of Valley Waste, Inc., the contractor currently hauling the city's garbage through its automated trash system. Jones showed council members slides of transfer stations in Wasatch County, and presented the board with estimated costs for setting up such a station in Centerville. Equipment for the station would include a compactor, containers, installation, fencing and ramps at an estimated cost of $56,500. In addition, dumping costs would run about $1,500 a month, compact com-pact containers will run $400 to $500 a month, labor for supervision would total between $650 and $1,085 a month (depending on being open three or five days), and cost of hauling recyclables to Salt Lake City would total around $700 per month. Total monthly estimated costs would be $3,350. Tipping fees are estimated at $3,689 a month as well. The station would also realize some income, with an estimated 42 truckloads per week at $5 each netting $91 1.40. Avoided cost of tipping tip-ping one-third of waste stream would amount to $1,228 a month, and recycling could also net $740 per month. Total income is estimated at $2,879.40 per month. Jones suggested that considerable savings could be realized if yard and garden waste was used for composting. During the yard and gardening season, that savings could total as much as $4,000 a month. The item was raised for discussion only, and the city staff will now study the issue further before making a recommendation to the council.
