LIGHT FROM SUGAR. A phenomenon, tho cause of which has not yet been satisfactorily explained, was recently observed by a government scientist during tho course of certain experiments. Disks of loaf sugar wore mounted on a latho and rapidly rotated while a hammer played lightly against them. An nlmost continuous radiation radia-tion of light was thus produced from the sugar. It was shown that the light did not arise from heating of the sugar, and it is believed to have been caused ,by some chnngo taking place in tho sugar crystals. The act of crystalliation is known to. bo sometimes accompanied by Hashes of light. Tho practical bearing bear-ing of these experiments is on tho question of tho possibility of obtaining obtain-ing artificial light by methods as yet untried.
