Show SMITH WINS THE SIX DAY RACE Three Laps Ahead of Edward Ramshaw. Big Crowd, Lots of Excitement Ex-citement at Close. The six day race at tho Thatcher pavilion skating rink was won Saturday Satur-day night by Wesley Smith, joung son of Isaac Smith. The joung man came In three laps ahead of Ed. Ram shaw, his closest competitor for championship cham-pionship honors, and ho was cheered to the echo The racers skated thirty minutes each evening of the week and In that time Smith made thirty-live miles and twenty-two laps of the rink, thirty laps making a mile. He Is a very graceful skater and his work was ever a source of pleasurc.Smlth skated for Howell & Crawford, and this firm is all swelled up with pride over what "wc" did. Ramshaw, who skated for the opcia house, was slated to win and at tho first of the week betting odds were In his favor, but young Smith's capacity to hold up surprised the knowing ones. On Thursday night when the test time of the whole races was made Ramshaw gained a couple of laps. It was expected that toward the race he would take a spui t and win out, but he failed to rise to tho occasion. He gained two laps on Saturday night but one was clipped off on account of fouling. foul-ing. Twelve-started In tho race Monday night but only five llnlshed Saturday night. Besides tho two named above, R Green, Windsor Richards and Archie Ar-chie Stoddaid stuck with the game, nml the. last named won third placo and tho $5 prize. Stoddard made thirty-live miles and one lap. He represented rep-resented the Co-op Drug Siore. Richards Rich-ards skated for F. V. Thatcher and Green for the Hub Clothing Co. During tho week largo crowds wcro at tho rink each night and on Satur-daynlght Satur-daynlght a crowd estimated at 1,500 was there There was somu little dissatisfaction every night of tho races, all ' kinds of accusations being made. Somo said Ramshaw didn't have a square deal from other skaters, and somo Insisted that tho Judges favored Ramshaw at every turn. Then there was dissatisfaction dissatis-faction as to the scoring, tho calling of fouls, tho Until counting on half or quarter laps. Still everybody enjoyed tho races, no one Is sore and other, races are talked of. |
