The plan is to abolish the protective system, to admit sugar free of duty and to turn over to the sugar trust and its few associates the whole business of refining and distributing distribut-ing sugar. me sugar trust mcreasea us capuai from $75,000,000 to $100,000,000 in September. Now the report in the trade is that this extra capital was raised that the company com-pany might wipe out the beet and cane sugar industry. - No evidence that the annihilation of the beet sugar industry of the country was threatened came to light until today. to-day. Then a circular was published which showed conclusively that this was the trust's Idea." The circular was Issued by Willett & Gray. This publication recommends less than the abolition of duties on all sugar and makes special reference to Cuba and the cost of sugar in Cuba. It was the general gen-eral opinion in the sugar trade that abolition aboli-tion of duties by congress where the fight undoubtedly will come later will make it impossible for the farmers to grow sugar beets profitably. The Immediate effect would be to turn over to the refiners of sugar the whole industry, free from the aggressive competition com-petition ot the growers of sugar beets. |
