Pierpont Morgan, who is the guest of President Mellen of the Northern Pacific, arrived in the city from the west this morning and put in the- day visiting the mines and smelters of the Amalgamated companies. com-panies. Mr. Morgan is accompanied by Bishop Doane and other churchmen, and the party this afternoon descended into the deep Anaconda mine, 2,000 feet below the surface. When he returned to the surface Mr. Morgan was asked if he found it 'hot "down there." "No," he replied. "I don't mind that at all. I have been in hotter places than that In my time." Several attempts were made to interview inter-view Mr. Morgan, but the PInkerton's men would not permit reporters to approach ap-proach him and Mr. Morgan objected to reporters going into the mine with him. |
