Show AN EXTRAOBDli ARY TRIP. By Muleback From Utah to Chile, South America. , . (Colon Telegram.) An instance of American pluck and research in the field of science is demonstrated dem-onstrated by the presence in this town of members of a party whose inquiry on behalf of science extends the entire length of the two continents of America. Amer-ica. Mr. Benjamin Cluff, who yesterday called at the office of the Colon Telegram, Tele-gram, is one of a scientific expedition which left Utah. U. S. A., on the 17th i of April, 1900, and on muleback they I passed through Arizona, the republics ! ft Mexico, Guatemala, Salvador, Hon-I Hon-I duras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, arriving ar-riving at Panama on the 13th of September Sep-tember last. The expedition has been equipped and sent out by the Brlgham Young academy of Utah and included Professor Wolfe (biology). Professor Fairbanks (photography), Mr. Benjamin Benja-min Cluff (archeology), and six young men, the transport being effected by twenty-live mules and horses. A noteworthy note-worthy feature of the trip is that not a man or animal has been lost on the entire route, which covered over 6,000 miles. Beyond slight attacks of fever, the nartv did not suffer from tha rii. mate, and a noteworthy feature is that no alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea or coffee cof-fee were used on the trip. The party was kindly treated by all they met throughout the route. They were, however, how-ever, fired at by the Colombian insurgents in-surgents near David, Chiriqui, having been mistaken for government officers, but when the error was discovered they were" taken to the insurgents' camp, allowed al-lowed to remain there a night, and then given a guide to find their road. It can now be stated that a trail exists from Panama to Utah, U. S. A. The worst part of the road is between the borders of Colombia to San Jose, Costa Rica. The researches embraced botany, zoology zo-ology and archaeology. Many species of plants were discovered in Mexico quite a,quantity of birdskins has been collected and some most beautiful photographs pho-tographs have been made of the ruins of Mitla, Palanque and Ococugo, in Mexico. At Comital ruins in the shaD? I of mounds were discovered, also in up- Eer Mexico, some very ancient ruins, ouses In caves, pottery and stone Implements Im-plements and a general study was made of the several countries in reference refer-ence to their products. Professor Fairbanks is already on the River Magdalena, sketching and taking photographs, where he will be joined by the balance of the party, and they will proceed up that river by steamer to Honda, where they will again take muleback, and continue through the southern portion of Co |
