Motorists will be asked to return discarded 1941 plates at the time they receive their new ones. These will then be turned over to defense de-fense industries. A suggestion to the state authorities auth-orities that some arrangement be made which would enable motorists motor-ists to use the 1942 plates tor successive years was given in a wire from Chief Maury Maverick, of the Division of Civilian Supply, Washington D. C., which read: "Motor vehicle authorities of all states were requested on August 8, to require motorists to surrender 1941 license plates upon receipt of 1942 plates. May I remind you of that request and ask that you make certain that necessary arrangements ar-rangements have been made for collection of plates and sale as scrap to steel mills. No steel will be made available for new plates for 1942. I suggest that you take such steps now as are necessary to provide for continued use of 1942 plates in 1943. Small tab or stickers showing tax paid can be used with old plates. Please let me know immediately what steps you are taking so we can report to SPAB; Suggest substitutes."
