"Withdrawal of children under 1.13 years of age. from employment which should go to older persons, and adjusting pay .of women to the basis o occupation and not on the basis of sex, are two principal suggestions set forth in a commuijication received by Chairman P. A. Thatcher of the state industrial commission. Theso suggestions are made In a statement recently re-cently issued -by Miss Mary Van KJeeck of the women in industrial servico of the United States. "With the cessation of active military operation," Miss Van Kleeek writes, "the industrial problem in the United States has changed Us aspect. Before the armistice armi-stice was signed, the difficult task was lo provide the enurmously increased production pro-duction required for the war while the' number of men workers was heirie: stead- j ily depleted by withdrawal into military : service. i '"Now that the armistice is signed, the ; immediate task is to accomplish the : change from a war basis to a peaee basis with the least possible unemployment. Thus stated, the ta.sk is the same for all workers, including women and men. "One large group in industry should he withdrawn at the earliest possible moment that is, the group of children under, 13, of whom there are nearly 2,-OOO.fxtn 2,-OOO.fxtn employed. Of thcsi more than TiOOMiii ,-ie in industries other than work on tiie Minns. "For women in industry the chief danger dan-ger is that they will remain In certain" industries or lie introduced '"to new onca al a lower watre scale than is paid to the men. II. Is time to eslahlish wages on the basis of ihe occupation and not on tiie basis of sex." |
