He was selected, the statement sa s, because he had been distinguish d by President WiNon as his special confidential confiden-tial agent in Mexico and because his previous pre-vious experience in Germany, which included in-cluded an interview with tho former emperor, em-peror, published in IJH'S, seemed to fit him for the task. The agreement made by Dr. Hale with the American, the statement continues, was "fur his exclusive services," and he "was st ip posed to have no other work, obligation or interest whatsoever except his duties as a news correspondent." For fifty-nine weeks of his employment, employ-ment, it is asserted. Dr. Hale was paid $14,300 in salary and $21,7&S for expenses. ex-penses. The statement quotes the letter of credentials cre-dentials which it says the American gave Dr. Hale. The letter stated that bis errand er-rand was solely that "of a neutral correspondent." |
