Addressing education "boards of Salt "Lake city and county the American Red Cross has requested an expression of opinion concerning the feasibility of introducing in-troducing toymaking into the public schools. Owing to the ban on meetings of aJl sorts at present no consideration has yet been given the proposal, according accord-ing to local educators. The purpose held in mind by the Tied Cross is not alone for the educational advantages ad-vantages such departments would bring' 10 pupa's, but also' to act as a stimulus l'or tiie toymakfng industry in America. The Red Cross has called attention to the fact that heretofore this country has depended upon foreign countries to sup- i ply the domestic trade in these goods, and points out that such departments! operated In connection with tne general ! education of pupils would develop crea- j live instinct and ingenuity by promot-1 ing Ideals of home Industry, In addi-.'Ion, addi-.'Ion, it suggests the stimulation of pro-'- duction of goods to be sold at Red Cross r shops and bazaars, the proceeds to go , to the school fund. "While boy pupils are at work on toys and similar articles produced in the manual trainfng section, girls, it is suggested, sug-gested, may be employed in the study, and production of domestic goods, such as jams, jellies, canned Roods', sugarless candy, and the like, as well as preparing prepar-ing recipe books. Sewing, too, is recommended recom-mended as a part of the new instruction plan to boost a commercial enterprise handkerchiefs, aprons, rag dolls, baby dresses, doll clothes, patchwork quilts, laces, and so forth. The Red Cross proposes that, as a matter ot" general conservation, waste material be utilized in the manual training train-ing departments, wood spools, scraps from lumber yards, old boxes, grape baskets, broom handles and cigar boxes, while, in the domestic science sections, all scraps left from t he cutting of Red Cross garments, pieces of new materials from homes, department stores, dressmakers, dress-makers, upholsterers, be utilized. Nature's Na-ture's contribution to the general scheme of conservation will be found in pine rones, pine needles, clean sand, rye straw. Willow twigs and such tilings to be found in the big outdoors. |
