Show A FAVOR ALL AROUND. The Washington Post, under the title "Smoot Will Not Resign ' records the Senator's surprise that he Is to be annoyed by th reopening of his i ase, and also records his confident self-gratulation self-gratulation that no unfavorable action" of the Senate g to 1" 6X1 1 by him. All Utah Joins with him In looking for "no unfavorable action" by ihe Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections and the Senate Itself And this raises the Question: "What Is favorable action and what Is unfavorable unfav-orable action, to Bmooi and his church and Utah in his as.-' The greatest favor Ihe Senate could bestow upon this Slate, npon the Mormon Mor-mon church, and upon Apostle Smooths Smoot-hs n citizen of this Stall- and a cuIIhk authority In his cult would be to dismiss dis-miss him from his high place in Washington, Wash-ington, with a pronouncement that no person, under alien obligation superior io his fenlt to the Nation, has a rlRht under the Constitution and the moral code to hold a Federal office Let us si-e what It would do for T'tah. Governor Cutler could appoint, or the Legislature could elect, a Republican of ability and faithfulness to the common weal, whose services In the Senate would be agreeable to his colleagues there, and whose service for Utah could be of vast Importance at the present time. So far as good for Utah Is concerned Pmoot's neat Is vacant now and must remain vacant while-Smoot while-Smoot stays. He has neither Influence In Utah's behalf nor standing as a National Na-tional Legislator, nor has he the requisite time to give to official duty. His exclusion would be an Invitation for American men and American money to come Into Utah Let us see what It would do for the church. It would drive the hierarchy out of political business. And that would be a God-send to the Mormon people Let us see what it would do for Smoot. He could return and live his religion and be something more of an apostle than he ever has been. Taken altogether the only unfavorable unfavor-able action which the Senate can take In this matter Is to retain Apostle Smoot as a shallow of a Senator at Washington, And If such shall be the action Smoot might as well lay his own photograph in the Senate chamber, come home, draw his salary, and attend at-tend to other business. His portraft would be as useful as himself. |
