Show MOBE HOPEFUL SIGNS. Editor Salt Lake Tribune The following follow-ing Is a true copy of verses seven and Olgbt, of section eighty-five, ,-,f the book Of Doctrine and Covenants, showing the revelation given to Joseph Smith. Jr.. In March. "7. And again, verily 1 sav unto vou. It Is my will that my handmaid, Vienna Jaqucs. should receive monov to bear her expeniies, and go up unto tho land of Zlon; and the residue of the money may be consecrated unto me. and she be rewarded re-warded In mine own due time. Verllv I say unto you, that It la meet in mine eyes that she should go up to the land of Zlon. end receive an Inheritance from the hand of the bishop, that she rtrnv settle down In peace Inasmuch as she Is' faithful, and not be Idle In her days from henceforth. "8. And behold, verily I say unto you, that c shall write this commandment, and say unto your brethren In Zlon. In love greeting, thut I have called you also to preside over Zlon In mine own due time: Therefore, let them cease wearying me concerning the matter Behold. I say unto you that your brethren In Zlon begin be-gin to repent nnd the- ange-Ia rejoice over them; Nevertheless, I am not well pleased with many things, and I nm not well pleased with my servant, William E Mc-Lellln. Mc-Lellln. neither with my servant Sidney Gilbert, and the bishop also, and others have many things to repent of; but verllv 1 say unto you. that I the Lord, will contend with Zlon. and plead with hor strong oncR. and chasten her until she. overcomes and Is clear hefore me: Uor she shall not be re-moved out of her place 1 the Lord have spoken It. Araen " This is verbatim. 1 have the book be-fore be-fore me. Tt was printed aDd published by S. W. Richards In London, 18-r.2. Provo, Nov. 27, 1905. The correspondent, who calls attention atten-tion to the foregoing verses of the purported pur-ported revelation, does not desire to have his name appear In print. The quotations given are not exclu-Blvely exclu-Blvely a part of the London edition of th Mormon Doctrine and covenants. They appear In the Utah edition of 1903, as probably in all intervening editions of the work. The significance of the correspondent's letter Is not In any oniM.Mon, by the church, of these- point-blank point-blank Utterances alienee! to be from God. but In the present applicability of them. If the hierarchy really believe that God did tell these things to the founder found-er of i heir church and that He means what He says, they are justified in contemplating con-templating their own conditions with some tremors. Their strong ones are being pleaded with, and their Zlon Is being chastened. Some of "the brethren" breth-ren" are beginning to repent, and it Is possible that "the angels rejoice ovei them." It Is a hopeful sign when Mormons In various parts of this State write to The Tribune, quoting from their own Doctrines In arraignment of their own leaders. It demonstrates that here and there i?. a man who is thinking for hlm-sef hlm-sef who realizes that th claims of the hierarchy are false, and that their a- tlonl are a fraud upon the religion which they profess. Such Independent thinkers cannot fall to leaven Ihe lump In their localities, and it is not a remote hope- that they wili grow In numbers an.l strength until they are powerful enough to cast off the yoke. The solidarity of the Mormon mass Is broken as never before since the people came to Utah. That breaking Is due. not to pressure from the- outside, but to the exposure of the defiant. SSnss less, selfish, and brutal transgressions Within the ranks of the hierarchy thetn-lelves thetn-lelves There arc more Mormons who are refusing to follow false leadership today than have i i been in s state oi Insurrection before, and Joseph P. Smith, if he continue to live, as we all hope he may, nnd If he continue his present methods, as we all hope he may not and yet all believe he will, must find himself. In a few years, the discredited dis-credited president of a shattered and broken host The hierarchy will not heed warnings from the Nation nor warnings from The Tribune. Probably they will continue to disdain warnings from their own people. But when Ihflr people dare to warn, the , us,.- j hemming serious. |
