NSL culinary water fees to be raised By JUDY JENSEN NORTH SALT LAKE - City Council members voted to approve a rate increase for culinary water and water connection fees at the council meeting on May 6. The increases are necessary to help to finance major changes in the system. At a public meeting on April 1 , residents were told of the need for changes in the existing system. City Engineer, Fred Campbell, made a presentation stating the results of a four year study the city had conducted to determine de-termine the city's water needs. Campbell cited several examples of deficiencies in the current system sys-tem that do not meet Board of Health requirements. Residents attending that meeting agreed there is a need for change. At the city council meeting May 6, city manager Collin Wood told the council members that financing for the project which will cost $1.1 million had been arranged. He explained ex-plained the city had qualified for a "buy-down grant" and the interest rate would be 6.4 percent. The changes will include two new one million gallon water tanks and a telemetering system to monitor moni-tor the system on a 24 hour basis. Water rates will be increased from the current $6.50 for the first 7000 gallons to $7. The cost for each additional 1000 gallons will be $.60 for valley residents and $.70 for hillside residents.the current rates are $.45 and $.55 respectively. respective-ly. The hillside residents pay more due to the increased cost of pumping. pump-ing. The new system will eliminate pumping to hillside residents as one of the new water storage tanks will be placed high on the hillside and will serve the hillside residents with a gravity flow system. Wood told the city council that a recent survey of comparable cities water rates showed the new North Salt Lake rates will compare favorably favor-ably to them. |
