It was realized at the inception incep-tion of the beautification division divi-sion of the Ontennial Commission Com-mission that if an effective campaign cam-paign were carried out nine-tenths nine-tenths of its succes would re-ult re-ult from effective organization in each community, an organization organ-ization that would reach every hi. me, and if possible every ci-t ci-t jzon both young and old. The . iirogram has been underway making the most progress are the ones with active and far-reaching far-reaching organization, based on its own problems and peoples. One thing was urged, however, and that was that no dead timber lie placed on any beautification beau-tification committee. The mayor in each town was asked to select se-lect a beautification chairman, and his committee was to be representative of all social and civic groups in the community. They were then responsible a few programs carried out by I, other communities in the state. The following chart depicts thc organization developed and used by St. George and is the reason for the fine job done dwn there. Other communities have also developed some fine programs but space is not permitted to explain them in detail. Tooele's organization was one of project assignment. The town was divided di-vided into a number of projects pro-jects which were assigned to the various civic and church groups in the emmunity. The city entrance was given to the Elk's Club, Main St. was given to the Chamber of Commerce, City parks and public grounds, to the Lions club, and so on . down the line. This method proved (very effective out in Tooele. Some fine stunts have also been used in thesecommunities to help them do the impossible. Salina, a town that did a very good beautification pob, decided decid-ed that if they were going to eliminate a lot of constant work, they would have to eradicate erad-icate the! weeds in their city streets, so they sponsored a dance from which the proceeds ! were used to buy weedkiller. ; They netted enough to allow ; them to spray every street in the community and the results ', were astounding. In Fountain ' Green the JC's undertook an ambitious project when they attempted at-tempted to remove all eyesores in town. Their method was to tack posters on every eyesore with the following inscription, "Fix up or tear it dowri." Ce; dar City, schools worked out a beautification pledge wherein every student signed his name that he or she would assist in beautifying their community by being responsible for the beautification beau-tification of their own homes. There are many many more methods being used all over the state. Certainly we could profit from an organization patterned after say that of St. George, for we need to get more people active equipment that the city has at its disposal if we are to do a thorough job. Is it worth the extra .effort? Yes is it? |
