Show Founders Day April 23, Recalls S. H. History 1854. What is now the State Penitentiary was built by the United States Government as a Federal prison. 1854. The Philadelphia Brew-ry Brew-ry was built on the Creek. 1856. Brigham Young established estab-lished a carding machine. 1800. A tannery was built on the Creek. 1806. The Sugar House Cooperative Co-operative Store was built on the site of the present fire station. 1868. Paper Mill Post Office was established. , 1875. Westminster College had its beginning. 1886. Street Railway System was built up to the Penitentiary. 1847, Aug. 10. Exploring party par-ty camped on the creek. 1847, Aug. 22. At a special conference of the church in the Bowery, the Authorities, by formal motion named the canyons can-yons and streams of the Valley. What is now known as Parley's was given the name, Big Kan-yon Kan-yon Creek. 1848 Parley P. Pratt worked a road up Big Canyon. 1848 Ira Eldredge established establish-ed the first farm on Big Kan-yon Kan-yon Creek, immediately south east of the State Prison and during the next two years raised rais-ed wheat, Indian corn and potatoes. po-tatoes. In the fall of 1849 Charles Crismon, Charles Kennedy, Ken-nedy, John Fisher, L. D. Young, John Eldredge, Norman Bliss, Albert Griffin and others built homes along the creek. 1849. Brigham Young built a grist mill on the creek. 1852. The first school house was built on the north side of the Old Paper mill. The school district was organized on June 8, 1852. 1854. brought for the Sugar Mill came from Provo and was placed in the building erecte'1 for this purpose on Big Kanyon Creek. Soon it was discovered that sugar could not be refined so the building was used successively suc-cessively as a paper mill (1856), bucket, churn and barrell factory fact-ory (1858); nail factory; stable round house for the railroad; coal storage. 1854. Kanyon Creek ward was organized and name changed to Sugar House for Sugar Mill. |
