Show Squad to Help Blitzed Towns, Sleeps En Route COVENTRY, ENG. The Queen's messengers, romantically titled food flying squad, formed to rush food from London to blitzed towns of the provinces, have failed on their first big job. Seven hours after the end of the second big Coventry raid the first, five months ago, revealed grave flaws in organization that led to the formation of the food flying squads-food squads-food officials sent out an urgent call for the Queen's messengers to help. That was shortly before noon on a Wednesday morning. Coventry is 100 miles north of London. Lon-don. The messengers raced out of London Lon-don on the Great North road at 2:15 p. m. They dashed into Coventry at 7: 15 a. m. next day. The flying squad traveled 100 miles in 17 hours. There were revelations the next day. While Coventry people who had been bombed out were waiting in their battered streets for food and shelter, the messengers were sleeping sleep-ing at Warwick. They rose at dawn next day to finish the journey. When they did arrive, the messengers messen-gers performed useful work. They were busy all day and until dark, helping the victims of the raid. But they were hours too late. Food flying squads were formed to rush food to blitzed centers within 12 hours of the end of a raid. Hot food sometimes saved bombed-out people from collapse. |
