Show Watkins Advocates Adequate Social Security Coverage For Co-op Workers WASHINGTON Special Legislation amending the Social Security law so as to eliminate discrimination against employees of farm cooperatives has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Sen-ator Arthur V. Watkins. Both the House and Senate versions of legislation to extend provisions and coverage of the Social Security system would include such cooperative employees em-ployees Senator Watkins ex- plained. The amendments which the Senator introduced, both of which are identical but which are required in different sections sec-tions of the legislation, are designed de-signed to extend coverage to such employees who have participated, par-ticipated, with their employers, in the social security program since its inception in 1937 to the present and also to those who participated for a portion of the period. Senator Watkins explained that the legislation was needed to rectify a decision of the Federal Fed-eral Security agency which denied de-nied survivorship benefits to a surviving- spouse despite the fact that the deceased spouse and employer had contributed ' regularly to the social security fund throughout the entire period per-iod of the deceased's employment. employ-ment. The case involved was a California case and the final decision in the matter was rendered ren-dered April 14, 1950, by the Appeals Council of the Social Security administration. Introduction of the legislation by Senator Watkins followed discussions of the problem with numerous representatives of the cooperative movement in the United States. |
