Show Hunters Urged To Shoot Porcupines Because porcupines, when overly abundant, do considerable damage to young timber stands, Foresters are urging hunters to' shoot them as a means of curtailing cur-tailing their numbers. This announcement an-nouncement was made today by Wm, D. Hurst, Supervisor of the Ashley National Forest. While the porcupine is a natural part of the Forest environment en-vironment and should never be exterminated, .their . nuimiber Should be controlled to the point where young timber stands are not seriously damaged. Deer and other big game hunters can per-foTm per-foTm a real service in this respect re-spect and represent a very effective ef-fective porcupine control means. These tips are for hunters who will help in the campaign to reduce porcupine population. 1. Aim for the head. 2. Use the gun safely. Don't point it toward others. 3. Porcupines feed in early morning and late evening along mountain meadows and stream banks. The porcupine population is heavy over all the entire Ashley National Forest, Mr. Hurst said. |
