Art Miller uas born and raised in the area, althoueh he did spend three years in California, and pfaved little league football the last four vears he could. All through his early career he was a tackle on both sides of the line, "I was just one of the biases! guys on my teams.' As a ninth grader at Millcreek he wasn't one of the bieeer euvs but he was one of their best lineman line-man thanks to his technique and ability to get off the ball quickly. THEN IT was on to Bountiful High as a sophomore where he played strictly offensive guard. Robert Franke got big and they put him on defense" he joked. Last year he started the year off just playing guard but then Coach Paul Waite talked him into playing middle linebacker, line-backer, "he told me 1 had the perfect build for the position. Plus Rick Balderston used to play the spot but moved to a defensive back so the position w as wide open for me so I moved over there." Art loved the position and the coaches loved the way he played it. Many people have been pointing to the lack of aggression on the part of the offensive line as one of the Braves' downfalls this year but Art doesn't agree, "We're aggressive enough it's just that we're not all intense all the time. It just seems for some reason that someone, and it's different people each time, doesn't get the job done. All it will take is for all of us to put out 100 percent on every play, if we do that then we'll win the games. We've shown what happens hap-pens if we don't" he added. LIKE MOST of their players Art Miller is one that vows the Braves won't quit this season. sea-son. "No way, will we quit, we're winners. Some of our goals like going undefeated have changed but we still plan on being at Rice Stadium Sta-dium come state tournament time. One of Art's biggest fans is his father, who used to coach at Viewmont in his early years, who used to video all the Bountiful games. Now the family just takes the school's video and records onto their own tape. "He never gets on me. Sometimes if he sees something that will help me he'll tell me. Like early in the year I was being blocked by the tackles and I wasn't getting rid of them quick enough and my father showed me some ways to get rid of him. Basically we just watch the film and I critique myself. I'm a lot harder on myself than he would be anyway" he confessed. ASKED WHY he was starting at linebacker, and he's among the leaders on the team in both assisted and unassisted tackles, Art gave credit to others, "There are a lot of good players behind me pushing for my spot and that makes me work harder" he noted. This 6' 185 pound senior is the type of individual indi-vidual that goes unnoticed in school. He's a good student and citizen, quiet and a hard worker. But he certainly makes his presence felt on the football field. Dave Wlgham Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL -- When the Bountiful football foot-ball team is playing it's easy to pick out Art Miller. First of all he's always on the field playing either offensive guard or middle linebacker. line-backer. Second of all he's usually right around the football on every play. And the third reason might be the one that gives number 57 away immediately, he wears black shoes. "AT THE START of the season the offensive offen-sive line got together and decided to all get black shoes to show that we were unified. I went out and bought them and turned out to be the only one that did, the others chickened out I guess. At first I took a lot of flack from the other guys on the team but I kept them anyway to be a little different I guess." Art is different from the others in many areas. He's a very quiet individual but when he speaks he has something to say. The Puma black cleats he wears on the football field set him apart from the others but so do his actions both on and off the field. THIS YOUNG man knows what he wants out of life, "after high school I don't know if I'll play athletics or not. College will be tough as it is. I've always wanted to go into medicine and I hope to become a doctor" he revealed. He's well on his way with a 3.7 gpa in classes such as |
