Show ,'Kismet' Opens ShowAtPMT The magic of an Arabian Jnight; splendid performances -by professionals from here, the west and the east coasts, and local favorites; dazzling cos- Stumes and resplendent scenery scen-ery and the exquisite themes of Borodin make "Kismet" the best of all possible evenings in -the theatre. "Kismet" opened Wednesday and will play through Oct. 16 at Pioneer Memorial Theatre. "KISMET" first opened on Broadway in December of -1953 and was so beautiful, visually and audibly, that it survived a long newspaper Q strike. "Kismet" first played at Pioneer Memorial Theatre in 1976 and was so well received it sold out in the first week and enjoyed an extended run. I BOTH PMT productions were directed by Ethel Martin lllof New York. Ms. Martin is ..well-known nationally for direction and choreography and was involved with the original ori-ginal production of "Kismet." y The book, by Charles Led-erer Led-erer and Luther Davis, is based on a play by Edward Knoblock. The music and "lyrics are by Robert Wright and George Forrest, from the 5 themes of Alexander Borodin, and such songs as "Stranger in Paradise," "And This Is My Beloved," "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," and others re--niain popular. ROBERT Peterson is Hajj, the poet-beggar-prince; H.E.D. Redford and Anne Rowe are the Wazir and Lalume. Zelie Daniels, U of U Theatre Department graduate, returns from New York to play Marsinah the daughter of Hajj. James Miller, a junior in the theatre department, plays The Caliph. Bonnie Evans, of Los Angeles, is choreographer and dances the role of Samaris. Miss Evans was a Princess of Ababu in the original "Kismet." "Kis-met." Ed Kerrigan and Victoria Victor-ia Ally are here from New York and Los Angeles as lead dancers. Michael Telmont of Salt Lake City is also a lead dancer. Buddy Bryan, of Los Angeles, who danced Akbar in the first "Kismet" at PMT, will play Jawan. Alan Nash, Winkie Tedesco Horman, Victoria Vic-toria Ally, Yuki Ayoub and a large singing ensemble and dance corp complete the cast. JAMES Prigmore is musical director and conducts the PMT Orchestra. Ronald Crosby has designed the magnificent settings. set-tings. Amanda Brown returned re-turned to PMT to re-create the lavish costumes. Peter L. Wil-lardson Wil-lardson designed the brilliant lighting and D. Dale Dean is production stage manager. Baubles, bangles and beads will turn a beggar into a prince every night (except Sundays) at 8 p.m. at PMT through Oct. 16. There will be a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. |
