By TOM BUSSELBERG SALT LAKE CITY - The Oct. 13 Davis Cup presentation presenta-tion at the University of Utah Rice stadium marks the first decade of the state's "grand-daddy "grand-daddy of all festivals" for marching mar-ching bands. THE MAN behind it all, Davis School District's Wayne ' James, says the invitational Cup is "designed as a climatic event for some of this area's jfmest marching bands" and THAT GROUP entered after reading about the festival in an international music journal. Activities will start at 6:30 p.m. for the large schools, as the first five perform followed by the first place small school at 8:10, Canadian guest group at 8:30 and last four large school performances at 8:30. Guest Band Weber State College Col-lege will perform at 9: 10 while all schools will "pass in review" re-view" at 9:20 with awards to be given at 9:45. Judging covers many facets, not only of the performance, but also band and audience de-corium de-corium in the stands during the program. A judge will be in the stands, roving constantly. That area is included to "promote better cameraderie between all groups and directors" direc-tors" with other areas including includ-ing general effect, marching and maneuvering, percussive effects and cadences, auxiliary groups and marching while playing. MUSIC MUST be performed per-formed for at least four minutes mi-nutes with the total on-and-off the field performance to last from 7-12 minutes. Brent Ban-gerter, Ban-gerter, Viewmont High School communications instructor, will be the announcer for the Da.vis School District-sponsored District-sponsored event. This year's program is being presented in honor of Lucile C. Reading, former Davis Board of Education president and veteran editor of the LDS "Friend" children's magazine, maga-zine, who died early this year. MR. JAMES indicated the Woods Cross band is favored again this year, having placed PLEASE TURN TO PAGE 2 will include not only four Davis school bands but Alta, Roy, Tooele, and probably Weber County's Bonneville. And for the first time, a "large" Idaho school, over 600 students, will participate, with Boise High School participating parti-cipating along with the Cup's first international participant, as the McGrath, Alberta, Canada, band entering in the small schools category, he notes. THE SMALL schools will compete starting at 1 p.m. Participating large schools include in tentative order of performance: Alta, Bonneville, Bonnevil-le, Roy, Viewmont, Boise, Bountiful, Tooele, Davis and Woods Cross. SMALL schools will be Dugway, Tintic, McAgrath and Delta.
