Show Ken Hickel!, Slay Labrum Win Boys Tennis Tourney Ken Nickell and Ray Labrum won the finals last week in the boys senior and junior divisions, di-visions, respectively, of the city tennis tournament, according' to City Athletic Director Clint Nelson. Nel-son. Nickell and John Ruppel won the senior doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, from Garry Walton and Larry Mitchell. Norman Hanson and Garry Timothy defeated Labrum and Ken Benson, 6-2, 7-5. Nickell won the championship in his division by defeating Ruppel, Rup-pel, 6-0, 6-2. He advanced into the finals by defeating Mitchell, 6-3, 6-4. Ruppel qualified with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Walton. Labrum won out by defeating Benson in the finals, 6-2, 6-4. To qualify he had beaten Hansen, 6-0, 6-2. Benson entered the finals fin-als by virtue of a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Timothy. Four players in each division entered the tournament. The winners of the first two matches match-es met in the finals for the championship. Coach Nelson said that Monday Mon-day will be the deadline for all entries in the men and women's tournament next week. This tournament will see competition competi-tion for the singles, doubles, and mixed-doubles championships. A trophy will be awarded to the winder of the singles and doubles. Medals wil be awarded to the mixed doubles winners as well as to Nickell and La brum. Coach Nelson advised that balls and nets are now available avail-able for volley ball play. All teams interested in playing should contact Coach Nelson within the next week. |
