In a competative membership drive, Witbeck Post No. 11, of Vernal, finished second and last and accordingly entertained the winners, Basin Post No. 64 of Roosevelt, at a "sumptuous" banquet in Vernal last Friday night. Umpires of the Uintah Basin baseball league called, "Play Ball" last Sunday and started eight teams into the summer's scramble for the league title. Com-merce. 10 Years Ago PFC Albert Harris visited relatives in Fort Duchesne, arriving ar-riving April 17 and leaving April 24th for his base at Scott Field, 111. Albert is a radio operator op-erator in the Air Force, having completed the course at Scott Field, where he hade the highest high-est average of his class. Mrs. Tina Wilkins, city chairman chair-man of the Salvage committee, reports that 4,278 pounds of fat have been shipped from Roosevelt Roose-velt this week, along- with 586 pairs of silk and nylon hose gathered. Supt. W. K. Throndson, of the Wasatch Academy at Mt. Pleasant Plea-sant has announced the candidates candi-dates for graduation on May 17th. Miss Karma Dee Harm-ston, Harm-ston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Harmston, is listed from Roosevelt, and Robert Karren, from Vernal. Hal A. Crumbo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Crumbo, of Ft. Duchesne, left last week for St. Mary's in San Francisco, where he will take a four month's training in the Navy as a cadet. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower ("Ike" to the Doughboys), was an ice works hand, boxer, cowboy cow-boy and professional footballer before going to West Point. His ancesters left Germany in the 18th century to avoid religious persecution, emigrated to AmerL ca in 1932. His soldiers i swear by him say he's both tough and lucky. 20 Years Ago The Roosevelt High School debaters de-baters made an excellent showing show-ing in the state debates tying for second place. Professor Her-I Her-I bert Maw, of the U. of U., re-! re-! ports that it was the closest debate de-bate which has ever been run off at the U. We are proud of these young people. The debaters debat-ers who went out were: Stanley Orser, Marjorie Wagers, Blanche Lublin and Madge Jacobs. Charles Schwencke, the coach, accompanied them. President Luke Clegg, of the Uintah Basin Industrial convention, conven-tion, informs the press that the executive board at their last meeting which was held at Fort Duchesne, Monday of last week, decided to hold the annual convention con-vention as usual with dates in August about the same time as last year. The Altrus Club met at the home of Mrs. Mary Orser. Mrs. Ella Young and Mrs. Orser were hostesses. |
