Show ARCADIA Mrs. Elsie Bird Arcadia OojpSe Honored On 50fh Anniversary ARCADIA Mr. and Mrs. Marvin G. Shields, of Arcadia, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an Open House at their home August 20, from 2 p,. m. to 6 p. m. Mr. Shields was one of the early settlers of the community commun-ity and a successful farmer. He came to the Uintah Basin in May 1915 and has resided here ever since. He was born in Lake View, Tooele County, October 24. 1882, a son of Archibald Cumingham and Ellen Gillispie Shields, the youngest of 17 children. chil-dren. He was married August 20, 1902 to Marion Love Sagers in the Salt Lake L D S Temple. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William W. Sagers, of Tooele. Mr. and Mrs. Shields are the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters Wan-less Wan-less W. Shields, Brid&eland; W. Ralph Shields, Roosevelt: Gladys Glad-ys S. Ross, Arcadia; Elsie S. Nielson, Myton, and Leona S. Zirker; of New ' Mexico. They have 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. People came from far and near Wednesday afternoon to extend well-wishes. In the evening eve-ning a party was given at the ward hall, under direction of the genealogical committee, of which group Mr. Shields is president and Mrs. Shields is secretary. A very beautiful and unusual program was rendered. An outstanding event of the evening was a family tree, arranged ar-ranged by Mrs. Golda Jensen and Mrs. Vera Johnson, with each branch of the Shields family fam-ily represented. Hanging from the tree was $53.00 wrapped in gold, a gift from members of the Arcadia Ward and a few friends who reside outside of Arcadia. Every member of their family fam-ily was present including children, chil-dren, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, with the exception excep-tion of one grandson, Gordon Shields. His wife, Wil'ma. and daughter, Devera, were preseni. Mr. Shields has been a successful suc-cessful farmer and has taker, part in the building of the Arcadia Ar-cadia community. He has also been active in religious and church organizations. He was the first YWMIA president in the Arcadia Ward; served as. first counselor in the bishopric (under two bishops) for 19V2 years; has acted as Sunday Sun-day School superintendent; genealogical gen-ealogical committee chairman, and was a ward teacher for 40 years. In addition he has taught in- all the church auxiliaries, was an adult Aaronic Priest-hodd Priest-hodd chairman, and at present is chairman of the genealogical committee. Mrs. Shields has enjoyed working in the church auxiliaries. auxil-iaries. Before coming to Arcadia she had served as Primary president, pres-ident, Sunday School teacher, president of the religion class, Relief Society teacher, first counselor in the YWMIA. Since coming here she has acted as a teacher in each of theaux-iliaries theaux-iliaries of the church, has served as stake Era director, as stake YWMIA president, was twice president of the ward YWMIA; was ward clerk for 25V years (under three bishops); officiated as a teacher in the Primary, in the MIA and in the Relief Society, So-ciety, and was a block teacher for 37 years. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Horrocks and son, of Tooele, called on friends and relatives here Sunday. Sun-day. They were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Zirker. Mrs. Marvin Shields, Mrs. Gladys Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Lor-yn Lor-yn Ross spent Friday in Salt Lake City doing temple work. Charlie Bird was taken to Roosevelt on Thursday of last week to receive medical treatment treat-ment for a cut on his leg. The following women attended attend-ed stake preparation meeting in Duchesne Friday: Elsie Bird, Gladys Capson, Thelma McKen-na. McKen-na. Vera Larsen and Nancy Gilbert. Gil-bert. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff McKenna and family returned Tuesday from a trip to Nevada to visit Mrs. McKenna's sister, Mrs. Vel-ma Vel-ma Riggs. William Sagers and family, of Salt Lake, visited Sunday at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin G. Shields. While here they attended at-tended funeral services for Pvi Wayne N. Shields. Leonard Smith, of Salt Lake, I was here Sunday to attend to j ! his property interests. Mrs. Clair Duncan and children, chil-dren, of Neola. and Delaine Bird, who is working in Roosevelt, Roos-evelt, visited Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlis Bird. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Zirker i and sons have returned to ,veir home in New Mexico, after spending a week visiting relatives rela-tives and friends. Miss Ardis Zirker, o Moses Lake, Washington, spent i week recently visiting her p,-"t and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John Zirker. Zir-ker. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Horrocks. Hor-rocks. Marva Mae and Evan, attended the Horrocks reunion Sunday. |
