Show "Error Of The Terror Re-Enlists In I Navy After Illustrious War Record Off and on we have been hearing hear-ing bits of information about a dog that possess loo many human frailties to be purely canine. can-ine. Although they made interest-ing interest-ing listening we just chalked, them up as the tall tales that sailors tell to while away the hours. However, the crew of the USS TERROR, Minelayer CM5, which is the Flagship of Rear Admiral ( Arthur D. Struble, USN, Commander, Com-mander, Minecraf t Pacific Fleet, are a loyal and proud lot and resent re-sent anyone taking a tongue-in-cheek attitude about their mascot mas-cot and his exploits. So just to put our mind at rest we went over to the TERROR to look up tliis wonderful dog. When we went aboard the minecraft we told the Officer of the Deck that we had come to interview in-terview their dog, a remark we calculated would startle him into saying that all this was a little silly. But no, he just looked a-round a-round for the dog and remarking that he was right around here somewhere, just as if it was an everyday thing to have someone come down to interview the mascot. mas-cot. After a futile search it was decided that he had gone ashore for a little outing but that he'd be back soon. They further assured assur-ed us that he doesn't stay on the beach long unless he gels drunk, which he is prone to do on occasions. oc-casions. While we were waiting we started to ask some questions a-bout a-bout our canine friend, whose name, we learned, was ERROR of the TERROR. Someone suggested sug-gested that we could get most of the information out of ERROR'S Service Record, which they volunteered vol-unteered to get for us. And sure enough, there it was, a regular U. S. Navy Service Record that revealed the following: Name ERROR (of the Terror) ; Citizenship U. S. ' Rate Dog, First Class, USN. . Place of Enlistment Naval . Mine Depot, Yorktown, Va. Accepted for enlistment 1 April 1943. 17 September 1943, CAPTAIN'S CAP-TAIN'S MAST OFFENSE Absent Over Leave for a period of two hours while in duty section. Drunk and Disorderly. Failure to muster with the PAL's (Prisoners (Pris-oners at Large). PUNISHMENT 10 hours extra ex-tra duty, 8 October 1943 Passed thru Panama Canal. 6 November 1943 Crossed e-quator e-quator this day and initiated as : a SHELLBACK. 8 November 1943 Crossed the ; equator again this date. 26 November 1943 ERROR ! extended his enlistment this I date for a period of two years. ; And so on, the Service Record went, complete even to a Health Record and the imprint of front ' right and left paw. Error is not ! just a dog and mascot of the ; TERROR, but he's a real member ; of the crew and has been right ' along with the rest of the men on ! the ship during some pretty rug- ged fighting. Any man aboard the ! TERROR will tell you that the ; moral of the crew goes up and ; down with Error's comings and ' goings. He's been aboard the Ship ! for about three years and during that time he's made a few side J trips on his own and was sadly ; missed by the crew. ' One day when the ship was ! tied up at San Francisco Error !' decided to see the bright lights of the city. Off he went up Market Street all by himself and wander- ed from bar to bar looking the ! situation over and pausing long enough to lap up a beer and here I and there a shot to which he is quite partial. In the meantime he ;! was reported missing aboard the ! TERROR and the word was pass i; ed to be on the lookout lor nim. He was logged AWOL and the scarcli was begun. The crew, knowing Error's failure for "the brew" knew just about where to start looking and soon picked up his trail. A dog that "makes the rounds" of the bars and by" some telepathic power makes his thirst known is not likely to go long unnoticed, especially, after he had made a few stops, going on his way with a very definite weave that could be described as tipsy. Once having found his starting place the searching party knew how to proceed, because Errors is a very methodical drink er and works one side of the street at a time and is very careful care-ful not to miss one spot on the route. Error was finally apprehended appre-hended in a bar just finishing a steak dinner that was proffered by two women having decided that from his shambling gait he was hungry and some food would do him good. He was taken into custody. Back at the ship he had some difficulty trying to negotiate negot-iate the gangway in his condition. It's often a neat trick with two legs so we can appreciate Error's trouble with four legs, each of which seemed to be going off in a different direction. The longest time that Error has been away from the ship, since he was adoptd and carried a-board a-board as a palm-sized pup, was when the TERROR was tied up in Kwajalein. It seems that part of the crew had been on the beach to a swimming party and had taken Error along. As they wore going back to the ship in the liberty boat Error spied another an-other dog on the beach. Over the side he went, swam ashore and took off down the beach after his newly-found friend. A search was instigated-but the ship had to sail without Error, and it was a sad day for every member of the crew from the skipper on down rhe TERROR had lost a valuable member of their crew morale of the crew tnnu 4 dip as the result Sen5?k a slHrt well asfeelinfSth ally the skipper Sen ?er? back to Kwajalein in tch to locate Error. lie l?n recognizable the disnJSL because of a very dSffi i lar .(It's a big lcafiSSgfe ej on it are Error's Service ?,?
