Show indignation AT TRIBUNE SPECIAL paris ida AUR aug 17 an indignation meeting of tile the citizens of paris and vicinity was held tonight to take 1 11 action concerning con corning the attack that was i imade upon editor james IT wallis of i the post at yesterday morning by deputy sheriff Nel baur all the prominent men are interested f in the matt matter lr aud and is now J under bonds to appear before justice L smedley tomorrow morning at 10 ile he got judge osmond to go to his 0 office cle immediately ame mme lately after the assault and enter his plea of guilty on the docket at this point james 11 II brown who was a witness to the i assault tried to enter judge Os monds office but they had it locked osmond came out into the corridor and brown said dont you compromise this matter with these met men meaning deputies and rich it is too grave an offense notwithstanding this warning osmond accepted 10 from f rom and entered it up as a flue district attorney budge is determined that such a proceeding shall not be tolerated and is taking the proper steps to see sec that justice is done attorney R S spence has been emi aloyed by the people to assist in the prosecution and no stone will be left 5 unturned to see that the dignity of the law is maintained the mass meeting held this evening to protest against thea the ai sault was well attended A committee of five was appointed to draft resolutions spirited speeches were made by a number of the prominent men of tile the city denouncing the outrage in question as the worst commit teil in aliis community as it appeared to lie be the result of a conspiracy r aey the action of the probate judge in fining filling the self convicted Kel baur a I 1 paltry 10 for so BO grave an offense was madea made i subject for criticism the following resolutions were adopted without a i dis dissenting enting voice and a committee of one was appointed by the ine meeting eting to a copy of them to the Ille sheriff riff whereas one of our respected citizens james 11 II wallis editor of the post has been assaulted and mal treated by joseph Nel baur deputy sheriff of this county while joel rich another deputy sheriff was within hearing and watching as an aider and abettor in this brutal outrage and whereas the perpetrator of this outrage is a menace to the peace and safety of law abiding citizens and whereas this dastardly assault is calculated to prevent the ex exposure P asure through the public press of misdeeds illegal charges charge incompetency and corruption of public officers the publication li of which is so essential to good government and whereas the peace and good order of the city of paris and the people of this county have been menaced and an attempt has been made to destroy law and order and invade the rights of the citizen and whereas the sheriffs sheriff Is office of bear lake county lias has been dishonored by the acts of two of its employees who apparently conspired against the aforesaid citizen james 11 II wallis one of whom did then and there enter his office beat and maltreat him and did him great bodily injury and whereas the two men who have so disgraced dis 0 raced themselves the office they held and the sheriffs office of bear lake county are paid out of the taxes of the people for the purpose of protecting the rights properties and persons of the people therefore be it resolved by the peaceable and law abiding citizens of this courty in meeting cr as assembled this 17 alth ath day of august 1897 that we denounce the acts of these two men as cowardly cowa idly and criminal that we denounce joseph A as the actual perpetrator of the crime that we denounce joel rich asan as an alder aider and abettor of the crime by accompanying to the place where the crime was committed and standing there during the commission of the crime without making the least attempt to prevent it that we protest against the further employment of these men by the sheriff of this county in the positions they are occupying as their acts proy prove e mein to be unfit to fill these positions and respectfully ask that they may be discharged resolved that ne B pledge ourselves as citizens of the state of idaho to maintain good order and to defend the rights of free speech and the liberty of the press as guaranteed by the constitution of our country against all assailants signed NED IV HOGE JAMES IT HART JAMES NYE T W Il HORSLEY WM west committee |
